Oh my god, they should sell it as a pre-packaged steam-box-skinn-package-to-unwrap christmas thing or w/e, completely in theme and all, but under the hood, just regular steamos with a custom game/movie-specific theme applied, could be a dota2 skinn or w/e, endless possibilities, but that wouldnt be as interesting to play on a deliberately old/lacking screen whereas in the case of Bioshock or other atmosphere based games, it totally would, there should be a portal 3 ... where the game is dynamic/procedurally generated/adapted based on your room/box-location/view/eyes/sight that can be blocked by turning/closing/covering it of course, but incorporate it somehow in the game design, anyway, ideas ideas, but bioshock on an old tv like this with maybe some colors but retaining that old retro look? oh man, it would be amazing, it would also further blend games & art, a steambox-skinn/theme for every unique universe, whats your favorite game/universe to radiate/inhabit? make it a steambox skinn that comes with a custom steamos theme/style as well that matches the exterior, to get you an apple-like design in terms of design-polish due to fixed known presets to design within/around

and make it local ai native of course, so you can always talk to it and request/apply/try-out all the available skins through sheer basic voice conversation a toddle could do if they cared to prompt it, a custom activation sequence/voice of course, a kind of password if you will, but words, sentences, poems with a pin code, with always multiple levels so that you can identify yourself without unlocking/granting your highest previlige levels of local admin, ability to alter the boot-config, which is default locked-out for everyone, so that the device can always be fixed simply by unplugging the cable or swapping out BOTH battery packs at the same time, you want the batteries not for the gaming, but to be able to serve as a security system for being able to serve as a fire alarm if it sees one, a power cut would disable the alarm capabilities, add local swap-able batteries and now you have a basic security system that helps prevent people dying in fires, and all other functionality is by default disabled unless explicitly enabled/opt-in, with privacy/security as highest values used all throughout the entire tech stack

all data mapped and put into specific data retention policies such that it automatically cleans/maintains itself and doesnt maintain all audio/transcriptions for longer than x minutes/hours/days/weeks-configur-able

ok yeah I want this, and theres so many other things I want to make as well, too many ideas to try out, and not all of them are as easy, this one involves hardware, and my preference lies in the software world instead

could sell it as a steam-game addon/expansion/bundle, team up with the original developers, offer 50-50 gains/split over the new 'expansion' that lets you explore/learn/embrace Linux and how that lets you confidently operate the steambox with full confidence of what it is exactly doing at all times, keeping an acurate power profile of itself and generating alerts on any anomalies detected if set to do so, it becomes a basic home guard basically, have it auto call 112 or family/friends under certain pre-defined detected conditions, all with multiple warning tresholds

anyway, back to my other budgets and my plan is already capping out every time block as is so ...

Looks like HDMI to 3RCA, then 3RCA to some the internal TV connector that feeds the picture. That larger black box seems to be doing the magic.

HDMI -> RCA -> RF

the black box is a RF modulator, creates the same signal that an antenna would give to the tv. That is the connection you see with two screws in the back of the tv. Most likely there is a balun somewhere because most rf modulators output unbalanced signal (coax) and has to be converted to balanced (flat antenna ribbon-like cable)

It's neither.  There's a flat-screen or something in there because the refresh rate on CRT and before isn't constant, it actually travels down from the top to the bottom and starts over.  They're using the in game setting Kurosawa mode for Black and White and using the shell of the old TV.  Also the glass for the TV itself is the wrong shape because the older sets were convex glass.  If you look at footage from the 90s and 80s of people filming screens it's VERY different visually.

60Hz/fps standard on US televisions, it's based on the AC power cycle frequency. Probably looks better in person as the video is at 30fps

I remember getting Skyrim and finally realizing my TV won't work anymore.

You couldn't make our any text on a CRT, it was a blurry nightmare till you got a hdtv. I luckily got a student loan refund because they were all scams then, got just enough refunded to get a good flat screen I had to wait all night in a Walmart freezer section to buy for $299.
