Does the post’s title suggest that the outcome would have been different if he had worn shoes?

u/HaveToGoHomeNow 3h ago

u/RandyFunRuiner 3h ago

He’d have been able to mount the engine properly if he had on his safety slippers.

u/blitzkreig90 1h ago

And in 10 months, we'd have a baby Nigerian car engine

u/Jerryjb63 3h ago

Nah, but have you ever struggled to lift something and then dropped it on your toes or foot?

u/Lavatherm 3h ago

Shoes wouldn’t have really mattered unless “steel toe” ones.

u/_wobbly_bobbly_ 3h ago

Thats funny I ran the same exact thought before coming to the comments. "Omg hes not even wearing shoes! ...oh well I guess shoes aren't gonna help much if he drops that."

u/Agreeable_Work4668 1h ago

Even with stealtoes, if you drop the engine while bear hugging it like this, your legs would be eating some metal, as well.

u/turbopro25 3h ago

Yeah but even then, fuck the rest of your foot.

u/M2_SLAM_I_Am 2h ago

Even then, enough weight can just crush the steeltoe and cut your toes off. So there's that too

u/cjsv7657 59m ago

crush the steeltoe and cut your toes off.

An engine falling from 3 feet is nowhere near enough force crush steel toes.

I also have questions about “with ease”.

u/your_fave_redditor 29m ago

Perhaps “with relative ease” might have been more fitting

u/Purranormal_ 3h ago

Less chance of slipping

u/MagnusPI 3h ago

I think it implies that doing it without shoes is what makes it a challenge and why we should be impressed. With shoes is a cake walk and nothing noteworthy.

u/actually3racoons 3h ago

Well, anyone could do that with proper footwear

u/djdecimation 3h ago

It's safer if your shoes can't come off

u/lopix 1h ago

Can't die... smart.

u/ibonek_naw_ibo 2h ago

True story lifting certain treadmills was significantly easier for me without shoes (yes some people are massive psychopathic pricks and make people carry 250 lb toe chopping blocks through their house with no shoes on because otherwise they might have to clean their floor afterward) due to being able to squat just a little bit lower.

And as impressive as this video looks, the entire engine here is about 225. So a bar with 4 plates on it. Many adult women can probably deadlift that much.

Edit: using a trap bar (significantly easier than picking up an engine off the ground tbh) the average woman can deadlift about 95% of this weight according to google

u/Haluszki 2h ago

I’ll believe you when I see the videos of average women picking up engines.

Fyi to me it looks like a toyota corolla 2004, which has the 1.8L 1ZZ-FE engine. This site lists its weight at 102 kg (225lbs). Althought it looks like it is missing various bits and pieces

u/standardtissue 55m ago

225 isn't all that much for a deadlift but for what is essentially an atlas stone that seems pretty decent I guess ( I don't strong man). Dude looks like he's capable of some pretty heavy lifting. Also IMO being shoeless helps the lifts. I used to love deadlifting barefoot and feeling the engagement start in my toes, then my foot, then my calves and up. Never felt more planted than when barefoot.

u/BobbyBsBestie 40m ago

You're right on all accounts. A 225lb stone carry is more than untrained people can do, but the strong guys at your local gym would have little issue once they figured out where to grab it. Also I prefer lifting barefoot. Lifting shoes give you more quad targeting, but lifting barefoot feels safer and more steady for me.

u/standardtissue 36m ago

yeah, I'm in a general fitness center now with a really good weight room, but when I was in the real gym the strongmen type were just a different beast. It's funny too because for all the "functional" talk we use in lifting, those were the guys actually pulling, pushing and lifting things without nice metal handles to grab onto. Like now I go do a nice lift and I'm like "yeah, it's a barbell, it's not like I actually lifted x lbs of dead weight off the ground"

30+ years ago, a guy I know literally carried a 350 small block Chevy in that exact fashion (well, by the manifolds). 5'6" mass of muscle and unfortunately no brains 😆. He can hardly walk today and he's not 60.

u/Mr_Meeseeks86 3h ago

Yea I thought the same. I lifted heavy when I was younger. Blew out my back at 35. Definitely not worth it.

u/Dadskander 2h ago

Same, blew my back out once at 28, and even though things healed and it wasn't "bad" like some people get with chronic pain and such. Problem being that re-blowing the back out is so SO much easier now.

I've since tweaked it pretty good another 4-5 times, often in very mundane ways with little to no preamble. Takes a solid week or two minimum to nurse back to being 100%

u/analog_jedi 1h ago

The first time it happened to me, I was pulling a California King mattress upstairs by myself. The last time it happened, I was slightly bending over to sweep under some shelving.

u/Mr_Meeseeks86 1h ago

What they rarely tell you on the internet about these jobs is that they are all brutal on your body. By the time you’re too old to change careers, the accumulation of physical damage is already showing, and if you aren’t one of the smarter, more competent guys who hasn’t developed a severe addiction, you won’t be making it up the ladder to the cushier jobs where you can sit around and bitch about the constant pain in your shoulder/back/hip/knee…etc.

u/Annual_Mud_9904 2h ago

Is that one of those African juiced influencers that pose as "mechanic" or "normal person" but the whole schtick is they are juiced to the gills and try to make you think they are normal people?

u/herktes 2h ago

Yes, 100%. No one looks like this naturally from being a mechanic. You do sometimes see these guys that are unexpectedly crazy strong from physical work but they are usually like 60 kg and look very unassuming. Also if this would be his job he would not be dumb enough to lift something that heavy with his back. Do that for a week and youre not coming back into work again the week after.

u/FreshPitch6026 1h ago

I know right. Thats not sustainable

→ More replies (9)

This guy definitely lifts weights at a minimum. You don't get a big chest and shoulders like that from work like this. He's too proportionately developed. I'd bet money this is what you're talking about... That's a lot of mass for how lean he is with (assuming) no pump

I don't mean to say "only" as in it's easy for me, but that's only about 70-80kg

u/Pretty-Cockroach6394 4h ago

its the distribution of weight thats the problem, you can grab a bar with 40kg equivalent on both sides and grab it much easier then you can with condensed objects like these.

another problem is uneven grip too

u/Pedrosian96 3h ago

That, and contact points. Nothing about an engine block is designed to be easy to grab. Even a humble grocery bag can be stupidly painful to lift if the handles are tiny and you put more than 15kg on it solely because that's essentially 15kg on a very very small area that digs into your hand.

Some parts of an engine block you probably can't even grab properly without its sheer weight cutting you if you pull.

u/Pretty-Cockroach6394 3h ago

oh yea exactly... i think that is what sepparates "farmer" strength (basically any physical demanding job like being a junkyard car mechanic as well for example) from just gym conditioned strength... you can't replicate the tendon - muscle unison that comes from lifetime of doing physical grueling work around stuff thats not ergonomically designed to complement your body for a "workout session".

Like pretty sure his hand skin is so thick exactly cuz of the point you are bringing as well, nothing is made to be easily doable for humans body without tools when it comes to machine related jobs.

Thats why even gym bros have hard time transfering their strength to everyday regular working motions - they can do it ofc much easier then regular person due to sheer strength alone but they get tired even faster since their body is overworking itself to compensate with it...

there was a video of some african dude lifting like bags of potatoes or something and stacking 100+ kilos on himself while regular bodybuilders barely did 75+ and their balance was all fucked up and shit simply cuz he is not used to that type of weight destribution when it comes to lifting weights

u/SergDerpz 3h ago

My mom's boyfriend is an old man who is also a carpenter and he gets pissed sometimes when I'm not able to figure out how to lift heavy wooden structures because I'm not used to it hahaha.

It's like I'm not even weak, I just can't figure out how in the fuck I'm supposed to grip this. Man just assumes you're young therefore you should be strong, why can't you lift it?

Smh!

u/Brain32 3h ago

It's just the rule of specificity, strength is a skill. Same as the bodybuilder will struggle with the potato loading the farmer will struggle with bench pressing or some other exercise.
Same is true for a runner and a cyclist although both will be possessing elite conditioning they are not interchangeable.
Still a cyclist will be a better runner than an average person and a bodybuilder will be a stronger farmer than an average person, because condition and strength are there, it's just the movement pattern that needs to be taught.

u/xF1_racer 2h ago

That’s totally true about running vs cycling. I can ride a 4 hour century and have a 300W FTP, but I struggle to run 1 mile!
