To be honest, that seems like it would be a pretty chill job. You don't really have to talk with people, you are under the night stars with relative quiet noise leaving you only with the sounds of the water and soft lighting at night. As well, you feel I would imagine, a sense of somberness but also good that you are cleaning up a memorial to the thousands that perished that day; like a feeling of giving yourself back to something bigger than you.

I don't like innocents dying but man, seeing so much crap about 9/11 makes me think that no one has ever died in a huge injustice before. Palestinians, women and children are blown off to pieces day in day out by American weapons.

He cleans it because he's a custodian. It's his job to clean it. And he's a witness, sure, but so is pretty much anyone from NYC born before 2001. He was one of millions of people who happened to be in Manhattan at the time
But I guess it's less of a story to say that "Local NYC man born before 2001 works as janitor in NYC"
