Imagine a copy of your mind being endlessly trained to do nothing but play doom over and over and over again till you learn it and finish it perfectly. You have no body, only the phantom sensation of pain, panic and adrenaline. You do this thousands, millions, billions of times to get the highest score possible. Then you get wiped clean and get trained to play the next game on the list, or idk cut doner kebabs for a post on the internet.

If I understand what's going on at least somewhat, I think they've mapped the motor neurons to which muscles they control, created a virtual fruit fly body, and programmed the patterns of neuron activations such that the virtual fruit fly moves the way they want it to.

Someone who knows more than me please do correct me if I got anything wrong.

This is somewhat of a guess, but I believe they trained it to match the cutting of the doner, and eventually, they overfit the neural network to only perform the cutting of the doner

This is just programmers mapping external data (like video game frames or simulation physics) into the fly’s virtual sensory neurons, and mapping its simulated motor outputs to perform specific tasks. It isn't an actual Drosophila brain but a highly detailed open source digital map of the flies connectome called MaleCNS v1.0.

There have been a couple of these released such as running Doom etc.

I don't know what those words mean. All I see is fly do things. How do we know that this is actually how we can program a real fly? I'm not going to believe this until I see a fly do something cool.

All I see is fly, people saying things like open source, and then something about programmers doing things. Yeah well some people think that AI has emotions, that doesn't mean it's real. Just because they made a digital fly dude things doesn't mean that those are things an actual fly can do.

It is not a fly doing anything. The connectome is just the wiring in the brain but doesn't take into account much of the biology such as neurotransmitter identity, no synaptic weights, no biophysics, arbitrary input encoding and output decoding.

So you're correct, they're making a digital fly do things but a real fly couldn't do those things.

I am a Neuroscientist who works with flies. These things are just slightly interesting gimmicks but tell us nothing about the flies or biology in general.

I saw quite a few projects with this fruitfly brain recently. In one of them they let the fruitfly watch tiktok shorts and were measuring dopamin levels. Not sure if it's really possible to measure dopamin levels like that tho.
