Just a friendly reminder that Obama's Iran nuclear deal had already reduced Iran's enriched uranium stockpile by 98%, removed 2/3 of their centrifuges used to make more, blocked weapons grade plutonium production at an existing reactor, and allowed access to inspections from the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA).
Trump pulled us out of this deal in 2018 and Iran gradually exceeded enrichment limits and stockpiled enriched uranium following the exit.

Obama's administration was so effective they managed to get the US, Iran, China, Russia, the EU, and the UK to agree on something. The only country that really objected to the JPCOA? Israel. Of course.
If Trump hadn't torn it up in a tantrum, it probably would have earned Secretary Kerry a Nobel Peace Prize.

Trump 1 destroyed it, Biden was a bandaid on a bullet wound, Trump 2 has ensured no one will ever trust America ever again. Every deal can and will be torn up every 4-8 years, even by the President who signed it.
Nice job Republicans, your idiocy and racism fulfilled the prophecy that no one would respect or take America seriously. I hope you all get the day you voted for. In the same way the Trump has a continuous base of support of about 30%, racism (job/housing discrimination and segregation, outright hatred and bigotry, etc) has been a core value for a good chunk of Americans. We briefly had a period where being an out racist was a fauxpas, but Trump and his supports managed to undo the social stigma of being a bigot.

62
u/Serious_Berry_3977 1d ago
Oh this is way beyond Bush-level of fuck up. If this gets into a protracted ground war it's going to be ugly. Unlike Bush's fuck up where numerous countries help in Afghanistan at the time, the U.S. is pretty much on it's own with this one. The economic impacts will be felt for a long time, and the reputation of the U.S. as the "world police" or even any kind of ally is broken. Then there's all the dismantling of federal stuff being done and that brings it to a whole other level.
Bush's fuck up looks almost like an honest mistake compared to this.

u/AngriestPacifist 1d ago
This might be the biggest strategic blunder a nation has made since Germany invaded the ussr in ww2. Like, it's clearly impossible to win without committing ground forces, and even Republicans can't muster the political will for that. So we're left in a situation where iran has increased power through seizing the strait, and they have no incentive to return to prewar relations without massive reparations, because they know that no one will commit to tens or hundreds of thousands dead in a ground invasion. And the Republicans can't even make peace because they've jerked the Iranians around so much already. Setting aside the morality of the war, it's a massive strategic blunder.
14
u/The_Roshallock 1d ago
My suspicion is that there will be some kind of ground offensive if Democrats have an outsized win in midterms. It would act as a perfect poison pill to their efforts to unfuck everything that's been done since he was re-elected. Now they don't have the time or resources to deal with student loans, healthcare, or wrangling tariffs under control from the Executive. Instead, they would have no choice but to go along with trying to prosecute a war they want nothing to do with, just like in Iraq under Bush.
When are people going to realize that Republicans cannot govern?

No. Simply because Trump is too much of a coward to send troops in (which is good for the sake of lives.) He was never going to "solve" Iran without boots on the ground. It's too bad, we could have actually done something for the people of Iran, but instead we're just destroying their country and giving the hardliners more ammunition to keep power.

Has the president considered sending everyone in Iran a $5000 check?
Edit: I actually did the math; assuming a cost of about $94 million per F-15 (per a 2023 pentagon estimate of the cost of a new model), and an Iranian population of 94 million (ish- happy coincidence, makes my math easy*) if 6 F-15s are taken out of service in this whole conflict and require replacement (and that’s not counting any other damage or losses which are confirmed, including dead and wounded servicemen), it quite literally would’ve been cheaper to send the checks
You can mail me my FIFA peace prize
Edit 2; I’m doing math on 4 hours of sleep- the math doesn’t math, but the point remains. The amount we’ve spent on the pointless war far exceeds the cost of just cutting every Iranian a $5k check to quit bothering us
7
u/MrT735 1d ago
They're past 6 according to this Wikipedia page tracking the known losses so far. 13 F-15E (8 damaged, 5 lost), you can imagine at least one of those 8 will be declared unserviceable.
12
u/galahad423 1d ago
To be clear, we’ve also lost a ton of other assets (not even including the monetary value of military lives), so I’m confident the damages here exceed the value of just cutting them a check
17
u/aCellForCitters 1d ago
$1/person/F-15, and somehow 6 F-15s is more than $5000? Yeah, you didn't do the math lol.
$5k per Iranian would be $470 Billion dollars
If the war ended today it'd estimate costing us $1 Trillion in all costs and economic loss (optimistic estimate) so we'd have been better off giving every Iranian $5000 to get them to do whatever the hell it is Trump actually wants them to do

Back in the late 70s my dad was an engineer working on a new anti-tank weapon, a loitering missle swarm that would target the "microwave footprint" (sorry if I mangle the terms, I was a kid and it was long ago) of tanks and divide the targets up among themselves, then autonomously engage them.
No danger of hitting friendlies since they were only fired over enemy lines at the columns of tanks the Soviet strategy used. A very big engineering challenge for the time.
It was a highly complex task with crude computing tools of the day; essentially impossible. The cost kept rising. At one of the final meetings my dad suggested it would just be more cost effective to simply buy the Soviet tanks outright. They closed the proiject shortly thereafter.

June 3, 2026 Congress (both the House and Senate) passed the War Powers Resolution which ordered that the Trump Administration end hostilities with Iran and seek their approval on future such hostilities. When the June 17 ceasefire (MoU) expired on August 17, the Trump Administration just went straight back into the same thing they had been doing up until June.
Congress needs to take action and not only order the Trump Admin to immediately cease hostilities, but it also needs to immediately vote to impeach Donald Trump for violating the War Powers Resolution which was passed in June.

u/smittyleafs 1d ago
It's the Vietnam problem. The US military isn't equipped to win this kind of war with the given operational restrictions and current equipment. They can't put boots on the ground, so that's out. They don't have the defensive tools to economically counter drones, so that's a problem. They've bombed everything they can militarily, so that's dome. And there aren't enough patriot missiles in the world to protect all their Middle East neighbors and assets effectively.
There is no military solution to the current problem, and Trump both sucks at diplomacy and can't use it here without looking weak/foolish.
They need regime change, but don't have the options for it like they do/did for years in Central America. So they're stuck. It's a bear being tasked to get rid of all the ants, but isn't allows to destroy the nest or kill all the ants. You're allows to wack em' when you see them, that's it.

And by attacking Iran the way they have, they've given the government there a very visible external enemy to point to.
"The economy is bad because of US sanctions" is kind of vague; it's hard to point to a specific action and a specific impact on the average citizen's life.
"The US dropped a bomb on this school, and all these girls were killed by it" is a lot easier to get across to people.
They've done the opposite of regime change.

As a nation, we have moved on from just hating Trump to a new understanding that we can no longer trust your country as a whole. It is going to hurt and its going to take a long time, but we will pivot away from the great relationship our two countries once had. We just feel safer not relying on a country that is so unhinged and not recognizable anymore. I was born in the 60's and growing up I felt like we were your little brother and shared the same interests and morals. That USA does not exist anymore. Good luck to anyone in the US that shares my sentiments. We Canadians see Trump for what he really is and eventually most Americans will realize the same in time and that will be his legacy. Waste of billions of dollars. But you can’t have affordable health care. You can‘t have government subsidized housing unless you join the military (GI Bill). I lived in government subsidizes housing that was specifically built for the middle class post WW2. But Mike Bloomberg shut down the program and our middle class rental building became luxury condos.
And guess who’s making billions in profit in this war? Investors….like Bloomberg. Like Musk, Kushner, Trumps, Kochs, Mercers. All of them are invested in the tech that’s being blown up and repurchased in this war.

There are some articles stating it has been bumped back to 2030, but I am finding equally as many stating this week it was said they are slated to be phased out this month.

Well… you can basically destroy about 30+% of an A10 and it will still fly like nothing ever happened. Thankfully they extended its service til at least 2030. A10’s were going to be retired last year.

The only squadron I would never threaten are A10s. Those pilots are both the most collected and craziest Ive ever met.
Granted Im limited due to time in Tucson to basically A10s

So much winning! I don’t know how the Americans can deal with all these glorious wins, every single day.
