I’m not buying food from a company that wanted to save money so much that it refused to clean its processing equipment and ended up with an infestation of parasites. Oh, and don’t forget that it denied it and tried to use political bribes to stop the investigation. And don’t also forget that they blamed their customer, Taco Bell, for their filthy parasite infested produce. If you want to get Taylorrhea, go ahead. But that company is dead to me.

FYI, you can tell if packaged produce or salad comes from Taylor Farms by checking the small traceability or production code printed next to the "best by" or expiration date for letters like TF, TFRB, TFPM, or TFRS.

I had to stop buying certain things at Walmart because they were Taylor Farms.

Also, Taylor Farms has used for-profit prisoners for labor, so that's another reason they need to be shut down.

u/TehKarmah 58m ago

That's good info, thank you! I used to buy them a lot and am trying to find alternatives.

u/AceOfPlagues 37m ago

It is rough.

Arizona prison workers make $1.50 in a state with a 15.15 minimum wage. But the goverment gets payed $4.50 by Taylor of course.

I've switched to Gotham Greens. Hopefully i have chosen wisely.

u/ViaBromantica 14m ago

Let us know if your face turns pasty white and you get a stupid grin on your face after you eat their produce

u/Minerva567 54m ago

My issue is its ubiquity where I reside. There is no escaping it. Name a grocery or store, you see those acronyms on all the lettuce.

So then it becomes a matter of, “Since the clowns now running the CDC, FDA, and USDA into the ground aren’t dropping the hammer on Taylor Farms, if one cannot find alternatives, then no more lettuce unless one serendipitously comes across alternatives.”

:(

u/Bazrum 39m ago

And the lettuce you can’t, as a customer, check like at deli counters and subways and such are likely from TF as well. Both grocery chains I used to work at used the shredded lettuce/leaf lettuce that came in big bags from them, and were put on the deli counters.

You can ask at the counter where the lettuce is from, I guess, but they won’t know, and will either try to check the bag they might or might not have anymore, or go ask produce, who won’t know and will check the bag they might or might not have anymore

Can’t escape it

u/Randomwhitelady2 39m ago

It is very easy to grow in the warm months (esp romaine and lettuces like that)

u/VeganJordan 21m ago

I even have pretty good success with greens in the Utah winters with just a basic freeze cover.

u/ChadCoolman 54m ago

Honestly if there's no risk of explosive diarrhea and I can't taste the sweat and tears of slave labor, is it even worth eating a salad?

u/Randomwhitelady2 40m ago

I sent Costco an email asking them to stop carrying their products. I 100% will not buy anything from them, so Costco is going to lose those sales from me!

Taylor and Driscoll are on the forever no list

72

u/Krewtan 1h ago

I won't buy them again. I order for a restaurant 2x a week. I buy a good amount of lettuce. That brand doesn't come into my house or restaurant.

u/MCBEA1130 53m ago

Unfortunately they're one of only two sources of lettuce in the US. I completely agree with you, but they source almost every bit of lettuce here. Short of not ever buying lettuce in grocery stores or having a salad out at a restaurant I'm not sure how to avoid them all together.

My family has actively been going to Taco Bell because they pulled the lettuce off of their foods proactively but then people stopped going to their restaurants as the illnesses increased while other restaurants didn't.

u/theollurian 38m ago

Yeah I work at a Kroger subsidiary in a major US city and a good 80% of our salad wall is Taylor Farms products, either directly through their brand or through white labeling. We have a decent local selection for the area, but it's not very big, and the cost difference is prohibitive for most. We've noticed a massive decline in salad sales because people just don't want to buy Taylor Farms, and it's hard to blame anyone. I certainly won't buy them after this debacle.

I started growing my own. It's easier than people think, and requires little space or tending (so long as you don't desire large volumes of course; I do live alone so ymmv). Grows great in my apartments window box! I really recommend 'merville des quatre saisons', which i got online pretty cheaply. Hardy butter lettuce

u/Big_Department4209 28m ago

Iceberg lettuce is the most boring and tasteless salad to have anyway, nothing of value is lost. It's just an expensive way to transport water.

(And I've eaten iceberg lettuce I grown myself in my garden, it was still as disappointing as from any other source).

u/thisissixsyllables 39m ago

Don’t forget the FDA who said the Taylor Farms sample was a false positive after their bribe. We can trust nothing from anyone anymore.

u/GrowingPeepers 23m ago

I agree with you but we need anti-trust laws to actually do this.

Have you seen how many brands Taylor Farms owns? Every single one.

Until we bring back anti-trust laws with teeth it's just going to be an "illusion of choice."

u/dirtystreetlevelshit 52m ago

Would you happen to know if Taco Bell changed their source of lettuce?

u/perenniallandscapist 14m ago

All consumers need to be more like this so these parasitic companies die from financial starvation. Good riddance. Americans need to become better consumers and citizens in general.

u/TheSmartDog_275 7m ago

I don’t buy Taylor farms but I haven’t been eating lettuce at all so this is nice.

Also the issue is that Taylor farms owns so much like store brands, so the alternative is expensive.

"At this time, there is no risk of people getting sick with cyclosporiasis from this source," the CDC said in update posted to its website on Friday.

Which is another way of saying, "if you get it, it's because of something else".

813

u/Wiochmen 1h ago

They still haven't officially identified an actual source for it, have they?

I'm assuming Taylor Farms check cleared, and they probably gave Trump a Taylor Farms Peace Prize

185

u/PrivatePilot9 1h ago

Another war ended. Hurray! FIFA, get another peace prize ready.

u/reddit_is_kayfabe 7m ago

"We fully tackled cyclosporiasis! Hooray! We're awesome! And if you get cyclosporiasis today, it's clearly because of a new outbreak. Certainly not a continuation of the last one because we ALREADY TOLD YOU we won that battle and ARE YOU CALLING US A LIAR and YOU ARE PROBABLY A LYING TRANS COMMIE WHO DID NOT GET CYCLOSPORIASIS AND ALSO SIMULTANEOUSLY GOT CYCLOSPORIASIS BUT FROM THE COVID VACCINE."

August 20, 2026
Epidemiologic and traceback data showed that iceberg lettuce from Taylor Farms de Mexico (a Taylor Farms central Mexico-based processor) was contaminated with Cyclospora and made people sick. The best-by dates for these recalled products have passed and they should no longer be available in stores or restaurants.

Investigation Update: Cyclospora Outbreak, July 2026 | Cyclosporiasis | CDC

91

u/bilyl 1h ago

TLDR we have no idea, and the FDA is still investigating

u/ci23422 53m ago

Outbreak tracing due to taco bells receipts. Even if the FDA is incompetent, the outbreak tracing paired with the receipts from Taco Bell points to the batch and origin.

u/St4rScre4m 45m ago

It’s not just Taco Bell. It’s whoever supplied that shredded iceberg lettuce. Just been buying my own lettuce heads instead.

u/aradraugfea 31m ago

They're talking about Taco bell's internal purchasing receipts being used to trace it back to a specific supplier/source, not blaming Taco Bell for hte outbreak.

As I recall, Taco Bell's OWN tracing has more to do with us knowing Taylor Farms is the source than any official FDA/CDC announcements.

u/DerekB52 22m ago

IIRC Taco Bell announced they were cancelling all Taylor Farms lettuce orders ~2 weeks before the FDA said Taylor Farms was the source. Then a day later the FDA/CDC said Taylor Farms was a false positive and safe.

It's been Taylor Farms the entire time.

→ More replies (1)

u/Wiseduck5 25m ago

No.

They know where it came from, but have not found the smoking gun that would confirm it. This is not uncommon with food borne illness.

Chain restaurants make the epidemiology pretty easy.

u/MeanJeanDopamine 11m ago

No, it’s worse than that. they know but Taylor Farm’s check to Trump cleared so they are intentionally keeping that information from the public.

u/redditobserverone 43m ago

Under RFK jr ‘best by’ dates are going to need to be printed in quotes or come with an asterisk

u/DefenstratedTwice 52m ago

I believe at some point they confirmed it was Taylor Farms after blatantly corrupt retraction by the CDC.

u/ForeskinWhatskin 29m ago

They might not know but we do. How quickly people forgot that Taylor Farms was found spraying wastewater on produce.

u/ToasterBathTester 55m ago

I’ll eat leafy greens in 2-4 years

u/BullCityLife 49m ago

Plot Twist: you haven’t seen eaten any for the last 2-4 years either lol

u/zstock003 28m ago

They stop announcing it once they can no longer find pictures of RFK that match the parasite

60

u/JoeRogansNipple 1h ago

Lol, they haven't even determined if that was the only source. The US govt is run by inept stooges

u/Blue-Blazer-Regular 42m ago

Didn’t the Taylor Farms CEO visit Trump then the CDC magically said it was a false alarm and the lettuce was safe?

u/TheProfessional9 18m ago

Yep, then they walked it back the next day

u/Qaetan 44m ago

We cannot trust the CDC until republicans are out of government. Continue avoiding anything and everything by Taylor's Farms.

u/fighterpilottim 34m ago

Federal court ruled in MS 2 weeks ago that Americans don’t have a right to truthful or accurate information from their governments, including in public health emergencies. https://www.theguardian.com/us-news/2026/sep/08/mississippi-clean-water-case-constitutional-right

In light of the lies just released in NY about the air post-911 being safe to breathe, and telling us not to use protections during early COVID, yeah, it might be true, but I have no reason to believe what they say. :-(

u/whatshamilton 53m ago

Always true of cyclospora. There are multiple regular outbreaks every year

u/TheProfessional9 17m ago

Not like this though

u/zoned_off 56m ago

I mean....yeah, obviously?  They aren't claiming they eradicated the parasite off the face of the earth.

754

u/archivistinthemaking 1h ago

Oh yeah sure I 100% totally believe the CDC they would never lie to me 😐

271

u/hurtfullobster 1h ago

“However, the Food and Drug Administration(FDA) said its investigation into how the outbreak occurred is ongoing”

Exactly.

106

u/PrivatePilot9 1h ago edited 54m ago

Translation: The FDA is trying to find another scapegoat since Taylor Farms were mysteriously cleared of wrongdoing after buying millions of dollars in TrumpCoin. Total coincidence.

I expect some poor Mexican field worker to be scooped up by ICE out of a field in Mexico soon so they can splash his face all over the place as the actual source.

Edit: Tongue in cheek, Taylor farms wasn’t actually cleared of fault, but I don’t believe for a second had the FDA not come to this conclusion so fast that Trump wouldn’t have eventually tried given Taylor Farms massive political donations to his benefit.

5

u/rainniier2 1h ago edited 1h ago

You're spreading misinformation. Taylor Farms is literally mentioned as the source by the CDC. It was not cleared of wrongdoing. Being angry is fine but at least get your facts straight.

Investigation Update: Cyclospora Outbreak, July 2026 | Cyclosporiasis | CDC

u/PrivatePilot9 55m ago

https://www.yahoo.com/news/politics/articles/taylor-farms-made-huge-donation-192241647.html

“In a stunning reversal on Sunday, the Food and Drug Administration said that lettuce samples from Taylor Farms did not, after all, test positivefor the microscopic parasite Cyclospora cayetanensis, which is behind the rising outbreak of explosive diarrhea sweeping the nation.”

The only reason this didn’t actually happen was because the FDA actually eventually got ahead of his ability to do so, but your argument is fair enough and I’ll edit my comment accordingly with a disclaimer.

u/nuraHx 1h ago

I mean I don’t trust anything with this current administration either but doesn’t lettuce have some kind of outbreak like every year?

u/nerdywhitemale 38m ago

The difference is, old system: Bad food detected, a few people get sick, FDA finds out what was making them sick, and tells the company to issue a recall; 20-100 people affected. Trump's system: Bad food detected, people get sick, FDA finds out and tells the company, company bribes Trump, Trump tells the FDA they are wrong, more people get sick, this drags on until an announcement like the one above comes out; People affected 12,883 so far.

With the old system, the FDA would make sure the faulty process was corrected. In Trump's system, nothing gets corrected, and the offending company can go on producing the bad food.

u/_goblinette_ 57m ago

You can trust or not trust the CDC all you want, but the reality is that lettuce doesn’t have that long of a shelf life. Any lettuce involved in the initial outbreak is long gone.

u/Gone213 21m ago

No, but the equipment used to process the lettuce does and we can all pretty much assume Taylor farms didnt clean the equipment so its still spreading.

u/mybutthz 44m ago

Yeah, I haven't been tracking specific cases but after the initial recall it was pulled from shelves and presumably there wasn't any risk anymore. Once they identify the source, as in what products were contaminated, that product isn't going to just be sitting on shelves after the fact. It's probably been fine to eat lettuce this entire time if it was being sold at grocery stores so long as you made sure that it wasn't the initial batch that got flagged and pulled. You can check the distributors and avoid them specifically, but it's not like lettuce from a farm 100 miles away from the original source is going to somehow get cross contaminated sitting on a shelf in a sealed bag.

The thing that is concerning is the rate of new contaminations and recalls that are happening which makes all food seems risky. Buying beef from anywhere but a local source is sketchy, buying produce in general feels sketchy, etc.

It's also hard to judge whether or not there's been an increase in incidents, or we're experiencing a higher rate of reporting since it's become such a big story and news outlets are just reporting every outbreak because it gets clicks.

Definitely seems more severe because there have been so many outbreaks that have reached the highest level of alerts, and I'm honestly not sure that I remember seeing that happen once in the past decade or more, let alone a dozen or so times.

Either way, if you can, buy local. If you can't, buy regional. If you can't, just try to do some due diligence to understand where your food is coming from and be safe. It's annoying, it takes up extra time at the grocery store, but with the way things are it could be helpful in avoiding undesirable outcomes.

u/TimbersawDust 8m ago

Is it the CDC under the current administration that bothers you or the CDC as a concept?

3

u/PrivatePilot9 1h ago

I hope that future administrations can restore trust to these sort of once respected governmental agencies, but they have a long road ahead. Currently, Trump’s thumb or the thumbs of his lackeys are basically pressing on every government agency at this point.

u/TCpls 5m ago

The reality of it all is we won’t be able to return to where we once were for a long time. Ever, if congress is further tainted. The next president will need to spend their entire term fixing Trump’s failures. Then it will flip back because people will be upset that they’re not doing enough after taking on a role to clean up the problems internally. And that’s if we ever get there. 92% of winning political candidates spend more on their campaigns. With those numbers, it will almost always go to whichever candidate has more financial support from groups. Leading to a potential cycle of never ending middle fingers to the people who can’t financially support candidates.

8

It's seasonal. Once the weather cools it can't really happen. So it's not even that it's been corrected, it was simply a matter of time for the risk to go away.

Assume Taylor Farms is still using untreated sewage to water their crops.

I’m sure that the CDC is following its new mandate of finding ways to disrupt the midterms and completely ignore it’s previous purpose of trying to protect the public health

u/Cohens4thClient 27m ago

They cant admit the source is trump's diaper.

He has multiple staffers with the job of cleaning his diaper. Thats just so much contamination everywhere he goes

10

Via [r/contagioncuriosity](r/contagioncuriosity) yesterday: https://www.cidrap.umn.edu/foodborne-disease/cdc-warns-new-salmonella-outbreak-linked-broccoli-sprouts

“CDC adds 1,150 more Cyclospora cases to US total
In other food outbreak news, yesterday the CDC added 1,150 Cyclospora cases to the US total, lifting the caseload to 19,595 infections. The agency said it is investigating 9,355 additional lab-confirmed cases and 6,149 suspected cases.

“Recent illnesses may not yet be reported due to the time it takes to identify and report Cyclospora cases,” the CDC said. "It takes about six weeks from the start of symptoms to when CDC receives the case information.””
