From what Iā€™ve seen thereā€™s no other place like the US where Halloween is celebrated to a point where I can see somebody show up as one of the alien hybrid thingies or put one of them up as house decoration. Maybe not a big deal, but it is a thing and there is trick or treating in every town I know of. Also you can buy Halloween themed stuff for almost a month already sooo it's most definitely a thing here.

Honestly dude Reddit likes to downvote people just because they're ignorant, even though the majority of Reddit are Americans and they compare literally everything to their firsthand experience. No Halloween isn't a massive thing worldwide, it's decently big in some western countries but overall it's a pretty seldom practices Holliday. The one super cool thing about Halloween is it's probably the oldest celebrated Holliday in the West as it's origin comes from all hallows Eve and Christianity simply adopted the tradition from pagans.

Sweden, where I live, is kind of somewhere in the middle.

Halloween is definitely a thing here now. Kids go trick-or-treating ("bus eller godis"), stores are full of Halloween stuff, people decorate their houses, and costume parties are common. The American-style celebration only really took off here in the 1990s, though, so it's nowhere near as culturally entrenched or over-the-top as it is in the US.

Interestingly, we already had the closely related All Saints' tradition. "Alla helgons dag" literally means All Saints' Day, and Halloween itself comes from "All Hallows' Eve" - the evening before All Hallows/All Saints' Day.

Sweden has made the calendar slightly confusing, because the traditional church feast, "allhelgonadagen", is still November 1st, while our public holiday "Alla helgons dag" was moved in 1953 to the Saturday between October 31st and November 6th. That's when people traditionally visit cemeteries and light candles on graves.

So Halloween wasn't introduced into a complete vacuum here. The modern costumes, pumpkins and trick-or-treating are largely an American import, but the underlying All Saints/All Hallows period has been part of Swedish tradition for centuries.

No, Halloween is not exclusive to the USA. Itā€™s tradition that goes back a couple of thousand years before the US was a thing.

Exactly. And Sweden, where I live, is actually a pretty good example of how the distinction gets blurred.

We've had All Saints' Day here since medieval times - it's documented in Sweden as far back as 1198. And "Halloween" literally comes from "All Hallows' Eve", the evening before All Saints' Day.

What Sweden imported from the US much more recently, mainly from the late 1980s/1990s onward, was the modern style of celebrating it: costumes, trick-or-treating, pumpkins, Halloween parties, decorations, etc.

So I'd say the modern American version of Halloween is very much an American cultural export, but Halloween itself certainly isn't something America invented. It's the modern form that's Americanized, not the underlying holiday.

America did what it does best with holidays and commercialized the shit out of it. That's probably why it seems more predominant in the US because every major box store plus all of these temporary Halloween shops pop up and people blow money on wacky inflatable skeletons and gorge themselves on candy. Then move on to the next holiday garbage sale.

Halloween is celebrated in many countries but its origins predate modern America, going back to the ancient Celtic harvest festival Samhain (sow-in), later known as All Hallows' Eve, when our world and the spirit world were said to overlap.

Fair play, I'll answer. We definitely do it here in Ireland. Trick or treating and decorating. In fact, Halloween came from Ireland mate. Sure we may not be as extravaganza as some rich parts in the us, but that doesn't mean we don't count. Also, I lived for 10 years in the US, not every Halloween is like what you see in Hollywood movies mate. Their main character syndrome is already severe enough, we needn't make it worse.

Youā€™re right, Canada, Ireland, and Australia have some participation.

Latin America has Dia de los Muertos which is much different.

No country in the world celebrates Halloween on the scale of the US. I handed out 45 lbs of candy last year to almost 600 individual Trick or Treaters. Itā€™s a serious thing here, and there are at least 8 other houses on my block that decorate as heavily and give as generously as I do.

Not really though. Outside of the big cities you don't really find people celebrating Halloween or trick or treating. In fact Tokyo has been banning Halloween gatherings in Shibuya (pretty sure it's Shibuya). And I've never had a trick or treater stop by.

If you go to the local big station you might catch groups of teenagers in costume hanging around, taking pictures and being loud but that's about it in my prefecture.

I also knew about how they are trying to ban it as well, but you can watch videos on YT of Shibuya last Halloween and every few hundred feet youā€™ll see someone in a costume still. They are definitely festive over there. Just canā€™t express it as much now on Halloween which kinda sucks.

I didnā€™t mention trick or treating because I donā€™t know if that was ever a thing in Japan, was it ever a thing?

Theoretically reffering to one person as being from a "race" is what racism is about, racism itself is the ideology that argues for "human races", most of the time when people talk about race they mean ethnicity like "hispanic" or "italian" etc. But they jumble it to the point of some calling "black" a race when it is a skin color, and something so superficial that can change during a person's life. By nature racism is a pseudoscience so the category of race shouldn't be used at all, but some fields like sociology try using it because they study the effects that social constructs cause on society and that includes the construct of race that permeate racist societies. If you go from country to country you will notice that the concept of race is regional and every country and place has a slightly different idea of what a race is with a vague pseudoscientific system to argue for it, in the end its always just to justify some old caste system that the elite has implemented and abused to be in power.

It took something from all the Alien movies and re-created it.

Just my opinion and I've loved the Alien franchise since I was a kid.

Almost. This is hungarian version of a polish surname, I'm almost certain that the last part is pronounced like "tski", not "ski". "Ts" sound is how we (Polish) pronounce c and Hungarians pronounce "cz"
