Arts/Crafts I just finished this mural in Knoxville (OC).

The shadows are sending me. This is so cool.

u/jemenake 16h ago
Right? The fact that the shadows extend beyond (what we are meant to perceive as) the bottom edge the mural is great. I just wish they had taken the photo at a time when the downspout’s shadow agreed with it all.

Too cool to be on the backside of a building…. I hope there are better sight lines to this amazing mural than what is captured by the drone.

Honestly, beautiful. You dont have to answer, but why lures?

u/mnhaverland 17h ago
I just have always thought lures were really pretty. And there is a lot of fishermen in the Knoxville area so the client liked the idea based on that. I presented several other ideas.

Salt Lake City has a program for artists to create murals. I think they have around a hundred now. You should reach out to them; you’re very talented.

u/mnhaverland 16h ago
I did that program a couple months ago- you can see my mural on the side of element ring company.

This is badass! I love the town. I do not love the school. You are making the town even more appealing!

Really awesome work. I've always wondered what materiels artists use for these. I'm assuming spray paint? But do you spray a protective coat on top or anything?

As someone that always wanted the giant Rapala lures hanging from the ceiling of sporting goods stores, I love this.

Hope this helps

But why male models?

The shadows definitely make this pop. Looks fantastic. I lived in a flat in Poland next to a large mural like this and loved it. Great job and amazing skills.

I believe they said Kerns Food Hall

u/MBaits 13h ago
Definitely looks like the back side of Kerns Food Hall.

I’m an old guy who grew up in Knoxville. I remember riding a mini carousel outside the Kerns Bakery. Long before it became a food hall.

u/CalloftheBlueFalcon 12h ago
My dad worked for Kerns when I was a kid, he took me to work often. I was mind blown the first time I saw what they did with the food hall on the inside

The contrast between the bright colors looking like a painting and the shadows not looking like a painting is the real kicker

I love the way murals improve the morale in our communities. This is a really nice one; it would brighten my day every time I saw it.

u/PAXM73 11h ago
So agree. And Mural Moral with a single vowel change. But they really do something positive for sure.

This is awesome! I will be flying to Knoxville in November, where should I go to see this in person! I thought they were real lures before opening up the post!

u/mnhaverland 14h ago
It’s on the side of Kerns Food Hall- a great place for drinks and dinner.

This is really, really well done. I’ve always wanted to ask a mural artist but, how do you maintain scale at that size?

The 3D and chrome effect are so cool. Having worked at a fishing/outdoor shop, i always thought lures are so cool looking! 🐟 🐠 🎣

You are so talented. The shadows make all the difference because you have to stop and look closer to make sure the lures are not actually real/3D.

You, my friend, are quite talented.
It's amazing to look at in photos, and I doubt that the photos do your work any bit of justice.

Incredible. Did you base the reflection on the silver lure off of the actual reflection from that spot?
