Also wouldn't she be called out for intentionally removing her helmet as she rounded 3rd base?
→ More replies (28)38
u/Downtown_Caramel4833 Jun 09 '26
Looked like she was losing it anyway (from running and poor fit) causing the front portion to obscure her vision.
I'm not an expert and can barely read, but my thinking is that specifically is what permitted her to purposely remove it after rounding 3rd.
(Looks like the helmet begins becoming a vision obstruction halfway between 2nd and 3rd base)
11
u/Comfortable-Dark345 Jun 09 '26
she hit the third basemen and it jostled the helmet

Especially with a garbage hit and a string of errors.
4
u/SacThrowAway76 Jun 10 '26
That was not a garbage hit. Itâs called a slap bunt. Itâs a common hitting practice in softball for women that can run fast. The goal is to just get on base, not necessarily get extra bases.

Lol players running their mouth after an error. You didnât do anything lmao
12
u/palabear Jun 09 '26
Every defensive back in football does this. Ball in overthrown by 10 yards, DB acting like they shut it down.
→ More replies (2)5
u/GimmieDaft Jun 09 '26
Totally true. But also not true. A DB is disrupting the route from the beginning of the play. Sometimes the ball goes exactly where itâs supposed to be, but the WR got bottled up somewhere along the way.
→ More replies (1)3
u/thisdckaintFREEEE Jun 09 '26
Good coverage also forces the QB to try and hit a more precise opening leaving him less room for error and leading to more uncatchable passes. If a DB gets burnt the QB can just aim for the numbers and if he's a bit off it might be caught head high. Tight coverage and he's gotta try to put it where only the WR can jump up and get it so if he's a little off it sails way over and looks way off.

u/The_Grim_Adventurer Jun 09 '26

She did stop after running through first and watched the ball, taunted the rf for a moment and then got on her horse. I mean. We get to look at videos and judge them. Who knows what was actually going on

u/Soulsetmusic Jun 09 '26
Only matters in softball or something? Happens all the time in baseball
16
u/WhereasSea76 Jun 09 '26
Nope, in baseball if the ball is live and you're in play or inside the diamond, you need a helmet on or the game can't continue. The only exception is AFTER touching home base or after the ball is no longer live. If you remove your helmet on purpose, you'd either be warned, called out, or ejected for repeats.

u/rebels-rage Jun 09 '26
Wow thereâs a lot I donât know about baseball/softball. Did she need to touch home twice or was that just cause she wasnât aware her foot touched?

Sheâs safe in any league period, because that third baseman interfered with the runner, which incidentally, was the reason her helmet came loose.
8
u/TheFerricGenum Jun 09 '26
In slow mo, I canât see the 3B interfering. Her back is to the runner and sheâs not in the base path, no?

I agree, and I don't like this at all. I see it a little bit in competitive Taekwondo, and it's super disrespectful. It's usually the coaches fault.

u/Imaginary_Effort_854 Jun 09 '26
8 can fly. But she sucks in every other way. Threw her own helmet off (you ain't that fast).Â
Avoiding the tag was awesome. Screaming at the catcher was trash.Â

Youâre allowed to run out of the baseline as long as itâs not to avoid a tag. Itâs impossible to round the bases at exact 90° angles.

we really need to stop letting grown ass softball players play on fields fit for 6 year olds.
9
u/teganking Jun 09 '26
i think it took her 10 steps between each base...maybe also doubles as a t-ball field?
→ More replies (1)→ More replies (4)5
u/vahntitrio Jun 10 '26
The bases are way too short. Teeball (played by 4 to 6 year olds) has 55 foot bases. NCAA softball is played on 60 foot bases. If you are reasonably fast you can't be thrown out on a routine ground ball to the shortstop.
Facemasks are required for defenders because they are forced to stand too close to home plate to have any chance of recording an out.

u/aipac125 Jun 09 '26
A home run bunt? Really?

u/No-Bobcat-6830 Jun 09 '26

u/dnbreaks Jun 09 '26
It should be ruled a hit and error. She would have reached first even with a good throw.

USA Softball (ASA): Intentionally removing your helmet while the ball is live will result in you being declared out immediately. [1]
NCAA: Deliberately removing the helmet while the ball is live also results in an immediate out. [1]
NFHS (High School): The first offense does not result in an out. Instead, you and your coach will receive a warning. A second offense in the same game will result in you being restricted to the bench. [1, 2, 3, 4]

Fastpitch softball is played on a smaller field than baseball. 60' between bases as opposed to 90'. The outfield fences are generally 200'-225' and baseball is usually 300'+

Softball seems to be the only sport where taunting is not only allowed but seemingly encouraged.
