ESPN actually did a segment on this from back in the day. They interviewed a seagull that was there and they confirmed this really happened.

u/Spider_Dude Jun 18 '26
I've seen enough Internet videos to know it's fake because the camera angle and framing didn't shake in disbelief.
It was steady and precise. As expected... Fake.
35
u/November-Wind Jun 18 '26
There was a special effects YouTube channel that did a review of this viral clip. Pretty convincing evidence (to me, anyway) that not only was it fake, but also how they probably did it, what was real, that he probably kicked several balls and where they likely landed, etc.
Bottom line: Beckham was really good, and really accurate, but the video is fake.

Beckam was REALLY good at free kick but not THAT good. if he was he would have scored on like 90% of his free kicks which he didnt

No video with conveniently placed product placement (the Pepsi can) and a celebrity is real.

I was at the MLS All-Star Skills Challenge one year, and some of the best chip shot artists in the world played a game like beer pong with chip shots from like 20 yards away and it wasn’t easy. Listen to Ron here.
6
u/sweatingbozo Jun 18 '26
I also don't believe it happened, but David Beckham was significantly more talented than pretty much everyone that has ever played in MLS. That's likely why some people would believe it.

There's a spate of AI videos depicting courtroom "gotcha" moments making the rounds on YouTube shorts. Titles like "Judge shuts down corrupt cop!" All fake, all very silly.
THOUSANDS of comments and arguments ensue by people who have no idea that they're arguing about fake ones and zeros.

Like the Ronaldinho video where he kicks the ball about 40 feet against the top of the goal and it perfectly flies back some can juggle a few time not letting it hit the ground to kick it back at the post.

Shoreline wind would be blowing the ball back, forcing him to compensate, but the last shot you can clearly see he kicks it away from shore. That last ball would be in the parking lot.

I'm not sure people understand how insanely difficult it is to aim a soccer ball in sand
11
u/BillysCoinShop Jun 18 '26
Not just that, the wind at a beach means youd have to also take into account the speed and direction. For something like an arrow, or golf ball, wouldnt be impossible (less drag) but a soccer ball has massive drag coefficients

I saw him intentionally (during the warm up) rip one through a little promotional billboard target hole back when Kansas City played in a minor league baseball stadium. I don't like soccer and I was still very impressed. I don't know if this is real, but I wouldn't be shocked if he did pull this off. That target hole was way the fuck up there, and he was a long ass way from it.

Have you not ever seen Captain Disiilusion? This is fake as hell.
2
u/chazysciota Jun 18 '26
It's well done, as Cpt D says, which makes it all the more asinine that Beckham wants to continue pretending it isn't. Nobody is questioning your soccer skills, homie. All you gotta say is, "pretty cool video innit? We had a lot of fun shooting that, so-and-so set it up, really talented bloke/lass." If you absolutely gotta lie about it, at least humble-lie like Steph Curry did with his fake full court shots... "Ya know, I did actually make one of 'em [wink]".
3
u/Historian99 Jun 18 '26
The other thing people aren't mentioning is, if this really happened, a normal human reaction would be to cheer and celebrate and have a "Holy shit, I can't believe it" moment. He just stands there so cool, doesn't react at all. It's staged.
4
u/kungtelly Jun 18 '26
He's won the Champions League. I doubt kicking a ball into some bins would rank that highly as an achievement.
→ More replies (2)2
u/Look_its_Rob Jun 18 '26
It is staged but if you ever do something super impressive that was all luck, its much cooler to act like it was no big deal so everyone thinks its just your ordinary skill level.
3
u/showusyourfupa Jun 18 '26
It's fake, there were plenty of similar videos with rugby union players around the same time.
4
5
u/slgray16 Jun 18 '26 edited Jun 18 '26
People think it's real because AI wasn't invented yet.
But the real story is that there never was a David Beckham. Its just sporty spice in drag because she always wanted to play for Manchester United but they never took her seriously because she was a girl.
They made two movies about that. "She's the Man" and "bend it like Victoria Beckham"
