No joke, but the Federation rules we played under, throwing your bat OR helmet like that is a dead ball out. This batter did both
Adding since this got a lot of comments: I looked up the NFHS rules, and I got it right. This should have been a dead ball out, batter out, runners return, batter ejected. The rules is pretty clear
(I was a certified NFHS umpire for a decade). But Forgoing the rules, this is NOT the kind of thing we want players doing. It would have been an excellent life lesson

I've got a kid with some talent as well, and also use Jeter as an example of how you act when you have talent.
And we are a fucking Mets family.
I'll tell my fun Jeter story though. Back in his playing days I was dating this girl whose father worked for a car service as a side hustle. One day he picks up jeter at some silly hour of the morning at the airport. He is taking him to wherever, and they pass a 24 hour walmart. Jeter asks to stop because he needed socks. So him and Jeter go into walmart at like 5am, and buy some socks. He said Jeter was an awesome guy, they really hit it off, and had a great time just wandering walmart at 5am. They part ways, jeter gives him a fat tip.
Anyway, the next day, Jeter sends a fruit basket to his house. It had been a running thing in the NY tabloids at the time, that Jeter would send gift baskets to girls he was with the next morning.
Needless to say, his fruit basket from Jeter became the source of endless jokes. He kept the basket on his kitchen table filled with napkins, much to his wifes annoyance, so he would have an excuse to point out that "Derek Jeter sent me that" at every opportunity.

Yeah, Sox fan since the early 80s, and I was a fan of Jeter. Even watching Nomar.
People like to give Jeter crap, but that dude was cool. Just did his thing, and got his job done. One of the things I remember from him playing, I don't remember the game, but he was running out a double,. As he rounds first he's chewing his gum and blowing a bubble and takes 2nd. Like...wtf my dude.
Bernie Williams was up there for me from that group of players as well. Always thought he was a good dude. Clearly, f all of them when they are playing the Sox. :) but outside of that, yeah, Jeter, Mariano, Williams, a few others.

Just this week i was coaching my 6yo’s team - coach pitch. I was over helping the 1st & 2nd baseman, and my son was over playing 3rd. A kid at bat just couldn’t straighten out his swing and make contact, and i heard my son yell out “what is this a turd?!” I walked over to him, pulled him over into foul territory and calmly said stuff like: we don’t do that. Every kid here is learning. We encourage and stay positive to every one out here. Etc. As i was waking back to first across the diamond, the kid finally connected with one and ran it out. I was still strolling over when i felt my son run past and go “high 5” the kid. Happy he did that, but still a little put off at the fact that he yelled that out. It means i still have some work to do. lol

Props !!!!!!! I have never forgotten when I was bragging to my dad about how good I was at baseball and he stopped me in the middle of it and said if you are really good at something you don’t have to tell anyone because they already know. It was a simple conversation but it has stuck with me for life! I’m sure your child will always remember the lesson you taught them!

I only ever had one guy come after me when I was umpiring. He took a swing at me when I was putting my gear away in my car but he was so trashed he missed by a mile and went night night all by himself on the pavement.

A bat flip is one thing, but tossing your helmet before you even get to 1st Base is automatic ejection territory. He also threw the bat into the field of play, not off to the side.
I wish an ejection before you reach 1st Base would disallow the home run.

I'm watching him round the bases and do all of that unsportsmanlike crap, then when he steps on home I'm calling him out, ejecting him, and sending any runners back to their base. Then I'm talking to the coach and possibly throwing him out--depending on what he says--for not coming out on the field and trying to put a stop to his players behavior.
Multiple players because I'm counting that chest bump BS too.

I used to be an ump and that kid was out the second the bat came out of his hand and ejected with a league review for everything after. Minimum 2 games for that assholery and likely the season of it was repeated behaviour.
I’m very surprised he made it around before the other team piled on him.

Won’t need to. I already threw him from the game for the bat toss specifically…And his father when he came out of the stands, and then called a forfeit for that team when the father wouldn’t leave the field.
I was a little league/travel baseball ump for 12 years. This exact scenario played out more times than I can count.

Nah, they aren't keeping the run. They don't deserve it allowing kids to throw bats into the middle of the field. Taking the helmet off before rounding bases is a no no too. Should have been called out the instant he tossed the bat.

Yeah it’s head scratching. That is just how baseball is down there, it’s just a different culture around the sport. This is the Dominican Republic. Baseball there is music, emotion and pure fun. Not the buttoned-up, overly serious version some people expect in the U.S. You’re just judging a different baseball culture by your own standards. The kid hit a home run and celebrated. It ain’t that serious.
