Video Caught the foul ball and didn’t even think twice before giving it to the little girl next to him. Such a wholesome moment.

Exactly.
It is the hunt that counts. Once you have it, you be a gentleman and either keep the ball or hand it over to the next kid / woman. There is no honor in keeping the ball.

Whats awesome about the reverse is after the thrill of stealing the ball from the child he just puts it on the ground and leaves.
It was never about the ball, he was in it for the love of the game.

Especially since kids aren’t fucking entitled to foul balls.
Sometimes people act like a twat but most of the witch hunts are just an adult at a game who got a ball and did t give it to a kid nearby

Yeah my first instinct was “give that kid a signed jersey”. Teams should encourage that sort of behavior. Cynically, it’s good PR for the team and the sport to have a reputation that their fans do this stuff.

It’s all about the chase.

Thats my motto with talking to women on a night out. Get the number, get out. No going home with anyone. If she texts you, ignore it. Mark the chase successful and move on to the next one.

Caught a ball at a game and gave to a child in front of me. Kid was decked out in team gear and all smiles. Kids parents were pumped for that child too.
My ex got angry that I didn’t give it to her instead of the child🤣 kept complaining on the ride home.
21
u/Greenman8907 21d ago
Ex for a few reasons, and that’s one.
8
u/Allen_Alien 21d ago
True, we were experiencing the same moment in totally different ways; time and time again. Believe it or not, I didn’t think about it much after that night, but eventually realized we had different expectations and values in too many areas.
As a child, an adult stranger caught a hockey puck and gave it to me. I wish I could get as excited for anything as I was for that.
Ex was wrong on that one, 90% of people give it to a kid without thinking twice. Hell, half the time kids give balls to other kids if they aren’t huge fans of the team themselves.
8
u/chbay 21d ago
I’ve spent 35 years trying to catch a foul ball or home run ball. Best believe if I ever get my hands on one, it’s coming home with me lol, sorry kiddo.

It would only need to be that one honestly, that's a bigger red flag than being mean to the wait staff
4
u/Houdinii1984 21d ago
I remember my dad took me and my sis early for batting practice and he was like a magnet. Two right in a row, for me and my sis, and like three more that he passed off to the kids down in front. That's awesome of my dad and all but what sticks is the fact I remember after all these years, and that's the part that counts.
Would do the same if I had enough coordination to catch a damn ball, but it's neat when you can see it becoming generational. So many things end up negative just like. It's nice to see it go the other way. Now his kids, and that girl's kids will probably benefit and that's not to mention the millions of people that saw this and want to do it themselves suddenly.
Good feels, all around.

The foul ball guilting is ridiculous. Good on this guy for CHOOSING to give it to the little girl. We caught a foul ball once (very hard to do where our seats usually are). It bounced off our seats and I chased it down. Once I got it, everyone in our section bitched and glared at us until we gave it to a kid. The only kid in the section. On the other side of the section. Nowhere near the ball. Didn't even get up from his seat.
Now, normally, ok... cool. Kid gets a cool memory. Except... it was my first time going to an MLB game. My girlfriend (now wife) got us the tickets because she loves baseball. It was a game between our home team and their biggest rivals, and they won. But my girlfriend ended up hating that game because a bunch of people made us feel like shit for being excited over a foul ball.
Should've kept that damn ball.

Tbh, this could just be me but I don’t see why anybody is obligated to give up a ball they caught or ran to get to a child just because they’re there… Nobody’s obligated to give your kids anything unless they choose to out of the kindness of their hearts, a lot of people need to stop getting on others who want to keep the ball for themselves, it’s fair game and these parents need to teach their kids about that.

u/IamJashin 21d ago
I am going to get downvoted into oblivion for this but whatever.
I wish public perception was that of a choice rather that of an "obligation".
Sure it looks cute and wholesome until the kid (especially a girl) develops expectation of being entitled to everything she wants.
Through out majority of history giving something to a kid was always a choice and kids were being taught they cannot expect things to be just given to them just because they want them.

One time, in our mid 20’s, my buddy and I go to a Yankee game and sit in right field behind Beltran. In between innings, Beltran finishes his warm up tosses and looks to the crowd to throw the ball. My buddy stands up as does everyone else, and he’s wearing his Puerto Rico WBC jersey. Beltran smiles, signals to my friend that he acknowledges the jersey and then throws the ball right to him. We were so pumped. We’ve been going to games our whole lives and nothing like that happened. High fives and cheering ensued.
But then, the entire sections starts booing and screaming at us. We look around to see what’s up, and there was a little kid in front of us who wanted the ball. He refused to give the kid the ball, because the ball was thrown directly to him. He didn’t reach over and steal or jump for it or nothing. The entire rest of the game the crowd was volatile us. My friend sends his girlfriend a picture of the ball and a guy behind us overhear that and he says “good let her know what a selfish piece of shit you are too.”
So yeah, it’s annoying that it feels like an obligation.
3
u/IamJashin 20d ago
Tbh it's not even annoying - it's beyond fucked up in your case assuming your story is accurate.
Like we are literally hurting the kids by teaching them to expect stuff to be handled to them.
I've just sorted this topic by controversial and I am winning! Tbh I am personally surprised my take is still in positive votes cuz I was absolutely expecting to be eaten alive - glad that at least more then half of us seems to still remain sane.

You can’t even stay until the 12th to get to keep a ball because there’s always a child around you have to give it to or be ostracized. He didn’t take it from her or anything. Adults should be allowed to keep balls they get.
Unpopular opinion I know
4
u/YellojD 21d ago
Is that unpopular? I’ve been to hundreds of games and seen kids throw full as tantrums over some stranger adult not giving them the ball they caught, and nobody has a problem with that.
It’s the dudes who will plow through groups of kids to get to a ball that’s the problem.
Part of getting a ball is judging the value of actually getting the ball. I once dropped a fresh beer to get a foul ball. Got the ball, but felt real dumb and thirsty afterwards.
Also, pre game BP and bring your glove if you wanna get a ball and get there early. Easier in some markets than others, too. Arizona is pretty easy to get a ball from. Yankee Stadium on Sunday Night Baseball bs the Sox? A lot harder.
5
u/Reading_Rainboner 21d ago
It feels unpopular but I agree that it’s the assholes that ruin it. This guy could’ve kept the ball no issue to me.
You have to pay like $45 to see batting practice at Yankee stadium nowadays unfortunately.
2
u/YellojD 21d ago
Oof! Yeah, that’s rough. I feel a bit for fans of the bigger market teams (kinda, y’all still have your fancy team so it only goes so far lol) on that one.
If you ever get the chance, like bucket list item, check out Spring Training and early D Backs season. You’ll have enough baseballs to start a league after that lol.
→ More replies (3)3
u/Quixotic_Seal 21d ago
At least on Reddit, it’s very unpopular. But I agree with you. You shouldn’t be wrestling with a kid for a damn ball, but if you get it fair and square you shouldn’t be forced to hand it over. Adults are allowed to be happy and have dreams.
3
u/Crohoo 21d ago
Yeah it made me think like the fan could have been a super baseball fan for multiple decades finally getting a chance to get the ball. The kid could have been initially excited to get it but it could have also been a passing thing to her. It could have meant more to him and it sucks that he had to feel obligated to give it up. It is what it is though.
3
u/Splendid_Goose 21d ago
I get it. It's about the chase. I wouldn't keep it unless the ball was special somehow

u/Zob_Rombie_88 21d ago
Breaking it down scene by scene, here's what happened:
He reached the ball first before her (obviously)
He started celebrating without realising she was right behind him
He turned around during the 2nd celebration and realised he was flexing right in front of her face
He immediately felt like the biggest douche in the world
Faced with the optics of looking like a massive nob on live tv, he did the only thing he could do and handed her the ball to make up for it
Good man, either way.

Why do kids just get shit? Yeah I know, I suck. But I hate that by default kids just get to have things. We all know that the girl is going to be interested in something else 5min later.
I'm not saying kids shouldn't be given things. Or that adults should take things from children.
But I wouldn't have thought this dude was an asshole if he just kept the ball and went on with his night.
3
u/MakinBacon1988 21d ago
I get what you are saying and you said it in a decent way. People are fucking weird for immediately attacking you.
I don’t necessarily agree with you, but I can see the point you’re making as reasonable.
Wishing death on your kids is fucking psychotic behavior
2
u/Otherwise_Cover_5467 21d ago
Yeah - it was pretty strange. And look, I was more just playing devils advocate and being silly.
I guess I if it looked like the girl appreciated the ball, I would have felt different. But as someone with 3 kids. I know when a kid is simply giddy because they got something and when a kid really appreciates a gift/moment.

2
u/Training-Belt-7318 17d ago
For most adults, it's just a baseball. What most adults care about is catching it. I preface that with most, and for some,.having the ball matters, and that's fine. They should keep it. What they shouldn't do is steal it from anyone or cause a disruption to get it.
But for the rest of the population, we get excited about the catch and we realize the kid will get more enjoyment out of the thing. I remember as a kid I got a towel from a Cavs player. I kept that thing for awhile, and when I went home I told my mom I wanted to sign up for youth basketball. I'm 40 and still play a few times a week. For most kids it is probably something they lose interest in immediately. But for some it could spark an interest in something that will become something they love for life.
I'll reiterate if you catch a ball and you want to keep it, you should. Nobody should shame you for not giving it to a kid.
3
u/PMmeDonutHoles 21d ago
I mean as opposed to what? The guy keeping the ball and losing interest in it five minutes later? At least this way, you get to give a child a cool experience/memory.
2
u/Teddy_theo04 20d ago
That’s if the kid even remembers, some of ya’ll seem to forget that a lot of kids do not remember everything that goes on in their childhood, even I couldn’t remember a lot cool experiences I have had as a child.

I would actually find a video of a man not giving the ball up to be more interesting just for the fact that is not something you actually see every day, (at ball games).
