Video Australia’s first-ever NFL game begins with a land acknowledgment — and the internet is calling it INSANE, especially with Australia’s annual Sorry Day also in the spotlight
Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification
Australia also has a national sorry day where the country apologizes to the aborigines every year.

Canada has "Truth and Reconciliation Day" or "The National Day for Truth and Reconciliation"
3
11
u/FuzzyTable 1d ago
Canada has one: the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation, or Orange Shirt Day. The day remembers the children who never returned home from residential schools and honours survivors, their families, and communities.
In terms of land acknowledgments, First Nations have been reclaiming land left and right. So there is no need for the sorry day.

And now you understand Australia. They talk more passive racist shit in normal conversation than you can imagine... About aboriginals, Asians, just about anyone who bothers them. But it's playful! Had an Australian tell me "Abos are generally nice people, they're just simple minded" and didn't think that was racist. It's okay to call Asians dog eaters. But nooo, we're super nice people, just laid back and loving the environment ya know?

Correct me if I'm wrong, but didn't Australia start out as a prison colony? Basically a big ass island they sent prisoners to?
3
u/mikedeltabravo6 12h ago
Correct, was originally a penal colony with many Irish petty criminals. The most amazing luck you could imagine! If you stole a load of bread in England, they would send you to Australia, your sentence would have been fully served on the boat trip and when you arrived they gave you a block of land because they were also trying to colonise.

A little reductionist. Reversing years of society and infrastructure development is a little harder than saying sorry snd giving a wallet back.
Not that I believe in the concept of a "sorry day" , It's all a little wishy washy. Some acknowledgement is healthy , but making today's citizens feel sorry for something they played no part is odd.
→ More replies (1)3
u/dwaynebathtub 1d ago
Hold on there old boy. If you are responsible for "years of society and infrastructure development" why wouldn't you also be responsible for clearing the land of its people and history and turning it into fuckin' England (blech!)? Why wouldn't you be responsible for infrastructure development if you killed and stole for the right to develop infrastructure?
The British didn't kill everyone and steal everything though. Aboriginal people still live with you in Australia. You shouldn't feel responsible for your ancestors or the British people in the past killing people and stealing the land, because you didn't do that, but you should feel sorry for the Aboriginal lives and history that were lost when people showed up and turned it into Big Little St. James Island.

I enjoyed watching the football game. Were other people just watching a halftime show or a land acknowledgement ceremony or something and discussing it instead of the game? It seems the game took place in a foreign country, and we should respect their culture if we choose to host games there. Why should Americans be whining about what traditions and customs Australia chooses to observe on their national days?

Can anybody explain to me when this rule of “you need to apologize for stealing my land” stuff begins?
Is it 75 years (Israel), 125 years (Australia) or 250 years (America)?
If so, what is the reason we stop right there and don’t go back to, say, Constantinople being conquered by Muslims?
Or Alexandria. That was controlled by many people during the Pharaonic era, then taken by the Macedonians, then the Arabs.
Should Egyptian Muslims return Egypt to Rome?
Should we make modern Italians have a day of apology for the razing of Carthage?
What are the rules?
93
u/John-Dune-Awakening 1d ago
Well the most important thing to remember is that it's all performative. So really, just go for whatever makes you feel morally superior.

u/BullTerrierTerror 1d ago
There is also a significant amount of money in it. The Native American casinos push this kind of stuff onto organizations which accepts their donations. Schools, charities, hospitals, arts and culture. So when you go to an event there is someone at the start basically doing the above. But a little less cringe.

I think what is important about the custom is the recognition of the lasting impacts of oppression, genocide and prejudice have on communities. Regardless how long the stolen generation occurred ago, we should not be ignorant how this has impacted indigenous populations to this day and should be recognised for as long as the rest of the population can acknowledge we are the offspring of privilege.

Here’s the thing taking land aka conquering is a unfortunate fact of human history. You won’t find land not fought over. You’re apologizing to the last people who killed the previous people who killed the previous people.
Nobody pearl clutches over the Ottomans forming a massive land empire assimilating hundreds of different people because it’s a fact of our past. Move on.
Apologizing for what transpired hundreds of years ago that you personally had no hand in is just insincere signaling. If you care put some money on it.

Just to clarify this is not a land acknowledgment, this is a Welcome to Country. If you listen she is welcoming the visitors to the place - she says you are ‘welcome to everything from the tops of the trees to the roots of the earth.’ This is sign of generosity and kindness.
This practice continues in Australia and many island nations in the pacific.

I need to correct this, as there is a lot of misinformation about this.
This is was not an Acknowledgement of Country. That is for people not of the first nations of the land in which the Acknowledgement to counter the statement of Terra Nullis by Governor Bourke in 1835 which was used as the excuse to take over the continent and ignore any claims of the people who had been here already for 60,000 years.
This however was a Welcome to Country which is a different ceremony.
That can only be done by someone who is from the lands in which the event is coming from.
Aunty Joy Murphy Wandin AO is a Wurundjeri Elder of the Kulin Nation, the people who lived where Melbourne is today. Naarm which some people refer to Melbourne to is the name of Port Phillip Bay which Melbourne surrounds, as it was the grasslands they lived on until the end of the Ice Age when the barrier at the mouth of the bay broke down and flooded the grasslands.
A Welcome to Country ceremony is an introduction of new people to the lands, telling the land / spirits that these people are guests and they are to be protected. So it actually more of a blessing on the event.
See it as nothing different to entering a holy site and someone giving you a blessing.
Too many Australians though do not understand this, do not understand that "Country" in this context is refering the land, the ecosystem and not a nation.
