Do those really work? It seems crazy and I don’t understand the science behind it. But magic pizza is pretty cool

511

u/Blueberry_Boy 15h ago

We are ride or die for ours. It was originally a hand-me-down from relatives, but it’s honestly the best way to cook a frozen pizza at home.

The original one we had did eventually die, but we got another on amazon, they still make them!

Not a bot or shill, I just really love this thing.

u/yellowweasel 13h ago

You ever stare at it the whole time it’s cooking and then when you look away your vision is spinning the opposite way for a bit?

Omg I was in a hospital waiting room daydreaming while staring at a horizontal scrolling LED sign. It was consistently moving right to left at a good lick the entire time, until at one point the text stopped at the end of the sign and I almost fell off my chair.

how is it any better than just an oven? also how much frozen pizza do you eat??

44

u/Hakunin_Fallout 7h ago

People either have insane size countertops to store all this junk, or walk around like fucking Jabba the Hutt after their 10th frozen pizza in a week

23

u/Elemental19xx 3h ago

Growing up before the popularization of air fryers, this was essentially our version. It does pizza very well obviously, but also cooks any frozen food like nuggets and fries very well, with the added benefit of not needing to heat the the house up with the oven.

It’s basically a hair dryer mounted to a turntable. Alton Brown would have a field day with this useless “uni-tasker”.

7

u/Hakunin_Fallout 2h ago

That's it then, lads, I'm cooking my frozen pizza with a weed destroying heat gun next weekend! Might even put it on youtube or something, lol

Works like a charm, way faster, easier, and less messy than using traditional oven

589

u/letmypeoplebathe 16h ago edited 15h ago

There is no way it's faster than an oven, but I'll give you the other two fo sho

Edit: I didn't think about preheating. I get it.

513

u/markcsoul 15h ago

No preheating is a big time saver, but only takes about 16-18 minutes on average

256

u/Tank_O_Doom 15h ago

And less heat in the house (except when it's cold out) and less electricity.

185

u/SolomonG 15h ago

Less electricity is questionable no?

It doesn't pre-heat sure, but it also loses way more heat to the ambient air than a closed oven would. Once you hit the temp you need a regular oven isn't going full blast.

147

u/therealhlmencken 15h ago

Yeah but you gotta warm a whole oven up. Over 3 pizzas I bet an oven wins over 1 pizza in 16 minutes I’m sure this bad boy isn’t drawing oven amperage

86

u/catjuggler 14h ago

Is everyone sleeping on toaster ovens? I have one that also air fries and use it more than my oven

15

u/ipreferanothername 13h ago

Yeah, when the summer is hot af I'm not turning the proper oven on. But my ninja air fryer toaster oven gets used all the time.

Frozen pizza in 18 minutes, crispy fries, consistent toast. They're on woot all the time for under 100. I love mine.

10

u/Starfire2313 13h ago

Are you guys fitting whole frozen pizzas in your pizza oven??

I use my air fryer and crock pot in the summer to avoid the big ole oven

I'm from Chicago and "Italian kitchens" are a thing. You may or may not be aware but Italian Americans traditionally have hated air conditioning before it became ubiquitous. Chicago was built with alleyways and therefore also has detached garages facing said alleys.

The evolution of both those things was a "kitchen" consisting of an oven with usually a few cabinets/counter and sometimes a fridge in the garage so the nonas can cook their red sauce (among other delicious things) all year round. I've personally seen them on the south side but I'd imagine they are (were) just as popular all over the city.

I used to gag going into my divorced grandpas place in the summer because he didn't believe in deodorant and loved cigars but thats a whole other story...

3

u/Jack-Innoff 12h ago

Can you fit a whole pizza in your toaster oven?

5

u/ObligatoryID 12h ago

Mine (above) can. I purposefully looked for one big enough for a 12-inch. If not on the pan just on the rack, closer to 14-inch.

u/International-Ant174 12h ago

We are a Breville house - can't tell you the last time we used the "proper" oven.

If it fits in the Breville, that is how it gets cook.

And Jack's frozen pizza work perfect from it.

Literally the best purchase I made 8ish years ago.

warming up a whole oven doesn't really mean anything, it's closed, most of the heat is kept in, the massive majority of heat lost is not in warming up the space in the oven it's in how much is bled outside while trying to maintain temperature.

u/Tank_O_Doom 14h ago

The pizza thing will use a max of 1,500 watts.

From EnergySage . com

Key takeaways

On average, electric stoves use 1,000 to 3,000 watts of electricity.

Ovens use 2,000 to 5,000 watts of electricity on average.

Using a stove and oven for a combined 7 hours per week will use about 1,022 kilowatt-hours (kWh) of electricity per year.

16

u/balls2hairy 14h ago

My toaster oven fits a 14" pizza and is like 1/3 the size of a typical oven. Hell our full oven is just pan storage now though it's just my wife and I.

Breville toaster ovens are awesome!

6

u/wlonkly 14h ago

Yeah, but a 3000w element will reach a given temperature twice as fast as a 1500w element, because resistive heat is 100% efficient. You need to compare efficiency with watt-hours.

6

u/TwoBionicknees 13h ago

how much something uses peak is a completely irrelevant number.

If a oven heats up for 3 minutes then only turns on every 2 minutes for 15 seconds vs something using half the power but it has to turn on every minute for 30 seconds it will use more power overall.

i wonder if you could put this inside your oven?

→ More replies (2)

8

u/EdricStorm 14h ago

I have one of these, too and use it a lot. They're awesome. The heating elements are only like 3 inches away from the surface of the turntable. An oven heats up the entire volume of air inside of it. The Pizzazz only has to heat up like 9 square inches of air.

It's basically the difference between being across the room from a space heater and right up on it.

I once tried to unplug my oven without turning off the breaker. My supine legs twitched so hard they hit the kitchen table and I lost my slippers. I thought for sure my heart had stopped! Not sure how that all translates into electricity consumption, but I learned ovens are not typical appliances that day!

How is the bottom though, crispy or meh?

20

u/me_at_myhouse 15h ago

The pizazz has 2 heating elements. One on bottom, one on Top. You can power either or both.

Since I don't like a crispy/burnt crust, I turn the bottom element off after the dough is the way I like it, and the top element continues to cook the toppings and melt the cheese.

So, you could leave the bottom element on and make it as crispy as you want!

Does the base heat or is it only the top? Is there some kind of cover? Surely it's incredibly inefficient if it's not covered, most of the heat would be lost.

It’s not a whole lot of science. It’s just a small electric burner coil on top and it just spins the pizza underneath it. We have one in our break room at work because a former coworker was that much of an evangelist for them. We honestly just use it like it’s an open-air air fryer half the time, you can cook all sorts of stuff on them.

19

u/Roofofcar 10h ago

You’re missing that the base is also heated. That’s always been the case from the first version, and is key to how it works.

My husband's roommate in college had one of these. Husband (then boyfriend) and I would get the chef boyardee pizza kits and a package of shredded mozzarella and make these on the weekend. Food service was limited on our campus on Sundays. I know the pizza maker wasn't meant for pizza dough but it worked great.

u/mortgagepants 14h ago

Work like a charm.

Almost exactly what domino's uses on smaller scale.

Element above and below, instructions on heating different crusts, thin, rising, stuffed, frozen, fresh.

Better than oven, pizza stone, BBQ.

Makes a red baron or a fresheta taste like restaurant pizza.

Motor City is great and I'm sure your device is also awesome, but you might want to reconsider just cooking this specific pizza in the tray in an oven the way it was intended.

Part of the charm of Detroit Style pizza is the "frico" that forms from the cheese on sides of the crust that gives it a real nice texture. The only way you can get that is in the tray that it comes in as the cheese cooks between the crust and tray and hardens.

To clarify: you actually want to keep any of the cheese that's spilled over to the sides of the crust where it is and cook it in the tray without moving back on top of the pizza.

3

u/plutonic00 12h ago

Thank you! I've been taking mine out of tray and then pouring all the toppings that had fallen into the tray back on top of the pizza and then returning the pizza to the tray. What a fool I have been!

I lived on Totinos square pizzas in college, university, and in the Army whenever possible. Frozen pizza is the backbone of Freedom and Learning, speak not Ill of it.

u/Princess__Nell 15h ago

Back when I was in college Totinos pizzas were round.

24

u/Number-Thirty-Four 15h ago edited 15h ago

JFC.... What was the fall of Constantinople like?

Edit- There is no fucking way Totinos pizza only became square in 2016. I would swear they were square by 2000 at least.

Have I been Mandela/Mengele effected?

Second Edit - I'm genuinely having an existential crisis over this. I'm spending the weekend going through old photo albums, there's gotta be a picture of me with a Totinos pizza.

Third Edit - Ok, it did used to be round. Wow. I guess I'm genuinely getting old. The decline into decrepitude is accelerating.

My sister said her favorite picture of me, and the one she uses on her phones contacts list, is me. Five ROUND Totinos pizzas deep after getting back from my first deployment. That was in mid '04, I think.

This is an S-tier device. Not only does it make a dollar store frozen pizza taste gourmet but you can also dump a bunch of tortilla chips and sprinkle it with grated cheese and it becomes the perfect nacho machine. BYO salsa and guac. You get to pick your perfectly melty cheesy chip at the exact right time.

50

u/Zifff 14h ago

Not just that. It works as the perfect reheat machine. I have the white from 25 years ago and have used it to reheat anything you can think of

23

u/commshep12 14h ago

We've had ours for about 15, and I still have yet to see anything that's as good at reviving bar food/fried food. Gets the crispiness back on fried pickles and onion petals from the night in like 6 minutes, thing thing punches above its weight for sure

Casual readers will think we're joking but I am 100% serious. Some people make their entire identity about air frying. I lived in a shared house with this device 20 years ago and it changed my life. I have never stopped thinking about it.

10

u/Cinderhazed15 13h ago

Pizzaz walked so air fryers could run…..

4

u/abendrot2 14h ago

Is it better than an air fryer? I currently use an air fryer to cook the costco 3 pack of Margherita pizzas, haven't tried nachos in it yet. Thinking about getting this thing but wondering if it's a waste since I already have a fryer

5

u/akkmedk 13h ago

It's just different. Essentially it's only 2 heating elements, one above and one below, with a turntable. I don't know why it performs magic but it does.

I have both the Pizzazz and an air fryer. The air fryer (the one I have anyway) uses a bucket so you can pile up fries or whatever. The Pizzazz rotates the metal plate so you can get wider things (like a large pizza) to cook. I wouldn't try to put a full frozen pizza into my air fryer. LOL

Iron and a record player? Does it spin?

6

u/GlumNature 14h ago

Yes the plate spins very slowly.

Well it’ll cook the hell outta whatever you want so I’d say it’s worth it no matter the look

Best appliance I own.

72

u/RN-RescueNinja 15h ago

I was gifted one then gave it away as a white elephant gift new in box. From the comments it appears I made a serious error. My loss

4

u/ZappyKins 8h ago

Well, maybe you made someone very happy!

So, not a total loss.

SortedFood did an episode about testing early 2000s kitchen gadgets recently (last week maybe?) and they had one of these. They were surprisingly impressed with it.

u/GreenTeaRain7 15h ago

Can you post a pic of what the pizza looks like when it’s done?

37

u/theplushpairing 16h ago

Why is your pizza square?

214

u/alvik 16h ago

Cause they don't cut corners.

9

u/OePea 15h ago

Bravo

7

u/alvik 15h ago

Wish I could take credit but I stole it from Ledo Pizza.

9

u/Sir-Nicholas 15h ago

Who stole it from Wendy’s

Whoever invented this did not have kids.

21

u/kds5065 14h ago

Or cats

6

u/Dr_Chym 13h ago

Seriously. We have 3 cats … 1 is a tortie … she’d literally find her way on top of every pizza… without getting cooked. She’d treadmill the pizza to eat it and do general fuckery to it.

6

u/RelevantDress 13h ago

My tortie would break it, scatter half eaten pizza everywhere and then get mad at me when I cleaned it up

u/mfising 16h ago

How long does it take to finish baking?

17

u/markcsoul 16h ago

Usually 16-18 minutes depending on the pizza type/size

5

u/Difficult_Spell7334 16h ago

I was thinking it would take way longer. Im actually really impressed!! Have you tired cooking a pizza with homemade dough?

3

u/markcsoul 15h ago

I haven't, I'm not sure fresh pizzas are ideal, I find if the frozen pizza sits out too long before starting to cook it doesn't always cook the best

3

u/fo0bar 15h ago

Not "real" homemade dough, but I'll do both those pre-baked crusts from the supermarket and "just add water" dough kits. Both work fine, and you can even use the pan to build the pizza if you prop the sides up on potholders (the bottom middle protrudes out so the unit can spin the pan).

This appliance is a staple in my family. They last forever and the only time it broke is bc my wife dropped it.

Stupid European here.

So the bottom heats up and then it gets "circulating" heat from above while it slowly spins around, or?

10

u/Saltpork545 15h ago

Effectively yes. There's a bottom and top heating element and a motor. The two heating elements cook your food while the motor makes it rotate, so it does stuff like brown and cook evenly.

I dated a girl with one of these and the smells are locked in my brain forever. Great stuff

3

u/RikkiLostMyNumber 16h ago

I would be tempted to make other stuff with that. Strongly tempted.

3

u/SergeiMosin 11h ago

I don’t own one (yet) but I’d imagine it’s probably great for nachos

u/Mefflin 15h ago

Got one just like that from my uncle like eight years ago as he had it for god knows how long and give it too use when our oven was out for repair and just told us too keep it

2

u/fatpunk 15h ago

I love mine.

Bacon is very messy but it works lol

Presto. Chippewa Falls, WI.

2

u/FrozenOcean420 15h ago

I have a super old ninja turtle pizza cooker that still works amazing haha, it’s not like an open burner style so much as a flat waffle maker that heats from both sides.

2

u/QuarterOpposite1989 14h ago

Had mine for 18 years, have made about one pizza on it every week over those years. Great for chicken nugget heat up too.

2

u/Glaggablagga 13h ago

One thing I love about using the Pizzazz is I can add topping cheese while it rotates after the pepperoni has browned.

Another thing I love about it is making a big ass chocolate chip cookie on it.
