I remember he fought pretty hard for it. He was seriously disappointed when they wouldn't even show up to the meeting for it.

The more cynical take is that they never felt shame, but Jon's advocacy as a celebrity brought unwelcome publicity to their mistreatment of universally valorized heroes.
