He even kept his head down trying to quickly walk by until the guy pretended to jump him.

He was tracking the movement of his feet. He saw them move forward and ducked.

Or that guy had been standing outside acting a fool prior to him walking by? There was already a crowd watching and someone recording. He was ready and possibly walked right by to see if the guy would try him.
