A house I lived in pre-COVID cost $300/month to heat the house during the heating season. Heating season up there went from roughly September to the end of March. I can only imagine that it would cost closer to $600/month this year.

Based on every factor from fuel prices, to scarcity of fertilizer, and so many other disruptions that occurred this year and last year, so many different things are going to come to a head some time between October and December. Catastrophic damage has been done to the American food industry from all of this, and there's a very real chance of massive runaway inflation on food products in that time frame. Our locomotives get ~2.5-3gal/mile each, and our RR runs probably ~350 miles/day between all our trains, I can only imagine the fuel bill.

Each train usually runs with 2 locomotives, and at 5 days a week, 4 weeks to the month, $5 diesel, very rough math says our railroad pays ~$250k/mo on fuel right now.

I should note that fuel and billing is not my department, so all the numbers are secondhand at best.

I've got a spreadsheet set up so I can track the changing prices and figure out when I need to go to my boss demanding more money because the costs are rising faster than the standard rates get adjusted (which happens annually). My opinion is we’ve crossed a threshold. Iran is attacking US navy ships, tankers, Saudi oil pipelines (via Houthis) while we’re resorting to hitting their tankers. Iran knows they have the US and SA on their back feet. Nothing the Trump admin tweets or says on tv will change those facts. Iran also has no incentive to let up until, at earliest, after the midterm elections.

The US has been eating itself since 9/11. The Patriot Act and other domestic responses killed American liberalism, the Iraq war killed all remaining credibility of US interventionism, Bush was widely hated even by US allies and when he was on the way out the Tea Party movement got off the ground, accelerating the rot of the Republican party which paved the way for Trump (well, they were always a bit rotten, but this insanity...)

9/11 really was a pivotal event and in a way Americans are giving Bin Laden what he wanted.

I live in a very small village. Roughly 2k residents and it is a staunchly MAGA area. The towns Facebook page is a never ending posting ground of people throwing out their sob stories of not being able to afford anything. They can’t afford groceries, they can’t make it to the food pantry because their shifts coincided with the food pantry hours. They can’t afford winter coats for their kids for the coming winter, they can’t afford their utilities. Basically non stop crying about how these people can’t afford anything at all and begging for help by anyone who sees their posts. Ya know, begging for socialism, which many have been vocal they really hate.

It makes me sick. They were elated their guy won again. For Christ sakes there were children with self made cardboard Trump signs standing across the street of our polling station. Middle schoolers holding up pro Trump signs.

I don’t feel bad for these people and I sure as hell am not using my money and resources that we need to hold on to, to give them dreaded socialism that they claimed is evil if a POC receives it.

Watching them at the gas pump is also entertaining. They can barely put anything in their tanks. The average household income here is 55k. The tree voted for the ax and is confused why it’s being hacked away at financially.

Even unleaded jumped $0.58 yesterday in my area.

The day we struck Iran, I bought gas for $2.60. Today it's $4.57.

That's a 75% increase.

PS: In Feb 2025 I bought gas for $2.80. So basically Trump managed to lower gas prices 7% before jacking them 75%

You don’t need a 1000tq Cummins to get to work every day, that’s extremely inefficient, but the gear ratio needed and amount of fuel you’d burn trying to move a loaded container up a hill with your Chevy Sonic wouls be a little silly and cost more in fuel if you pulled it off.

( like your mom) This is partially why I'm irritated over the super heavy focus on EVs for trucks & semis vs. Plug in Hybrids/ Range Extended EVs or some sort of Hybrid derivative in the U.S. at least.

You can theoretically have instant and high torque, regenerative braking, little to no need to use engine braking, enhanced brake & rotor life, reduced idle time etc. while also using regular gas.

It seems to be the perfect use case for the technology.
