star trek 4 the voyage home is, as you probably guessed, the 4th film in the star trek franchise. along with wrath of khan, first contact, and possibly the 2009 film, it's often considered to be the best film in the series. however, it's also an amazing example of how the power of cinema can change the world for the better.

the plot of the film is that kirk and crew must go back in time to the 1980s to retrieve a pair of humpback whales so that they can translate a message from an alien craft. in the 23rd century, humpbacks are extinct, having been hunted to extinction in the 21st century.

at the time the film was made, humpbacks really were an endangered species. however, along came voyage home, a film that tackles how horrible it is that a species would become endangered. best exemplified by a scene that is often overlooked. the scene where kirk and spock are posing as members of a tour group to the aquarium. gillian explains how humpbacks are becoming extinct due to whaling. spock says "to hunt a species to extinction is not logical". to which, without missing a beat, gillian replies "who ever said mankind was logical".

alot of people saw voyage home and were moved by it's message. voyage home was the first star trek film to be screened in the soviet union. the film's message lead to increased efforts to preserve not only humpbacks but all marine life. humpbacks are now protected under both the marine mammal protection act and the endangered species act. in the years since the film was released, the population of humpback whales has grown and the species is no longer endangered. as of the writing of this post, there are an estimated 135,000 humpbacks in the wild.

i'm not saying that star trek 4 singlehandedly saved humpback whales from extinction. however, it is important to acknowledge the part that it played in it. and now, knowing that, i'll never view the film the same way again.

I feel like I’ve watched all the “typical” fall movies already, but I love watching new movies and I want to watch some seasonally appropriate vibes. I’m adding a list of the ones I’ve watched, please recommend me anything you think has a fall feel to it, even if the movie doesn’t feature actual fall in it. We go on vibes. Any genre is fine, but I’m a horror lightweight. What am I missing??

These aren’t works of genius (besides the docs) by any means but hey, I’m easily entertained. Kind of bums me out that so many people haven’t watched them.

What are some of your favorite overlooked movies I can add to my watchlist?

She’s incredible! A powerhouse of comedic and dramatic talent - I had no idea! The Invite was this subtle, awkward performance, self conscious, anxious, so interesting and well played. Then I want your sex is this bodacious, loud, sexy, ridiculous role! So much range across two movies in such quick succession - I’m now fascinated and want to watch everything else she’s done!

Just caught the movie on Netflix. I had the positive reviews in the back of my mind but never quite gave it a chance. Holy cow, wasn’t this incredibly fun, full of heart and love for the IP (I am barely familiar with D&D lore and still could tell)... I had no complaints until the very last scene, which lacked the powerful performances it very much needed, but other than that: the comedy, the VFX, the worldbuilding, THE action stunts, the locations... even the beautiful ending credits sequence... this was a nerd masterpiece through and through. Lots of people complained about He-Man not connecting with the audience it deserved... this was vastly superior. I would not be mad if the upcoming Zelda movie could deliver the same goods. I think the last time I had this much fun was with Sinners. Clearly, marketing dropped the ball on this one. Seriously, if you haven't seen it, prepare to have a blast. Also, Hasbro/Paramount -- please gives us a sequel.

I know, It may sound a bit weird. But I am one of those people that love going to movies a bit earlier than usual. But not for the previews, commercials, ads, Local ads etc. But for the music that is played before and during while something is showing up on the screen. I do not know what it is but there is just something about the music that I love. For example. When I went to the movies last month. I was only able to capture one song on my Shazam which was

Due to travel and physical medical reasons I can't go to the movies as often as I used to. But I would love any help finding a way to find the music played in the Auditoriums.

I’m a dad with 9 and 11 yo girls. When we watch a movie together as a family, we end up catering to the 9yo as she’s still very much into films for younger ages but my older daughter is much more mature and refuses to watch these “movies for babies” as she calls them. So we decided we would watch more mature movies with the older one when the younger one isn’t around but I grew up with 2 brothers so I have no frame of reference for suitable content to watch with her.

What are your recommendations for me to consider?

Fell in love with the tropes and themes in Anora, especially the romance with Igor. I’m looking for similar films where the romance isn’t necessarily traditional and includes an ML who loves from afar. Something with that same yearning, subtlety, and shy romance.

I thought the leads were extremely attractive, and all of their dialogue was written so perfectly. Even the subtle things, like Igor getting Anora’s ring back, or the metaphor of asking her how she felt about the car. I loved how he protected her from afar and always had so much awe in his eyes whenever he looked at her. And the “wow, impressive” after she literally punched the fuck out of him???

I just loved the themes and overall dynamic between them, and now I desperately need more romance films/movies/shows with that kind of relationship.

I guess another romance that I thought was almost about to play similarly was between Garth and Agnes in The Testaments...but we didn't quiet dvelve into it completely.

Any recommendations?

I believe to have some form of never-before-seen promotional material for Big that escaped liquidation from video stores. It is a replica piano, but not the FAO Schwarz mat or one of the rental ones. This is a legitimate replica made for kids or play on at video rental stores, and I cannot find anything like it online. Does anybody know anything about this? It seems to have been manufactured by techno futures inc. I am not planning on selling this anytime soon, so don't try to buy it. Thanks in advance for any and all help!

Movies often have a character that represents what the author and audience despises. They usually create a scenario where the protagonist speaks some personal truth to this character, but it’s really for the sake of the audience.

I’m not talking about the main antagonist. I’m thinking more about the random barista character that is told off because the drinks are silly or pretentious sounding to the main character. Stuff like that.

Scott “Kid Cudi” Mescudi has recently been teasing his second directorial effort in a year, on the heels of the addiction drama Doe. And we can now tell you that it’s Wrong Number, a horror thriller where he stars opposite Barbie Ferreira (Mile End Kicks).

Currently in production in Los Angeles, Wrong Number centers on Ibn (Mescudi), a lonely self-help author whose unexpected romance with a mysterious woman named Eliza (Ferreira) turns into a waking nightmare when he becomes the target of an unseen stalker and the prime suspect in a string of murders.

Okay, I firmly believe the moral of The Devil Wears Prada was, "let's not let our corporate soul sucking bosses ruin our relationships" and the moral of The Devil Wears Prada 2 was, "actually work is the only thing that fulfills us." What a complete 180.

Like, Andy shows back up at her job and gets sucked right back into the politics and drama and we're supposed to be fine with it???

Don't get me wrong...I get why Meryl Streep's character says she likes working. It's totally valid. But I think it's ironic that corporate movie producers are sitting in rooms telling us we should all pick corporate boardrooms over touching grass or something :(

Charlton Heston's character, George Taylor, in the 1968 classic Planet of the Apes) radiates the exact same unearned confidence, severe narcissism, and dramatic hyper-masculinity as Will Ferrell’s Ron Burgundy. Once you see it, you cannot unsee it....

The Twilight Saga is like comfort food for me. The movies aren't for everyone I know that.

But they comfort me. And with the weather outside taking a distinctly autumnal turn, the first movie in particular feels perfect. Im going to get wrapped up, get cosy, and have a Twilight marathon over this weekend.

so i keep hearing stuff about how troubled producing the film even was to a extent that director left the movie cause he did not want to face the blame if movie was bad and the book author had to convince him to come back to direct the film. now i just hear different version of what happened behind the scenes of the movie but i do not know which story to beleve in. and even though i watched this movie long ago i do feel confused why this movie was bad and failed .cause the author seemed to be involved in the production process so i need clarity on what was actually going on behind the scenes of this movie..

so when a book series adaption like harry potter , lord of the rings , hunger games etc are adapted into films and are succesful enough to become a franchise the studios that produced these franchises profit very nicely through this and get a high repution . but still this is bound to make other studios jelous so they do a big mistake by finding another famous book series to adapt into films so launching your own book adapted film franchise might sound like a exiting deed according to fans of the books . but the important matter is that adapted films might only work if they make it without ruining the factors that made the books great in the first place and also cast the charecters properly . in some cases this idea worked out well but there were a ton of failed franchises like eragon, percy jackson: even if it was a hit the way this movie butchered the books slow reveal portions was unforgivable, artimes fowl, the dark tower etc . all these movies were clearly made by the studios clearly envisoning launching their own harry potter or lord of the rings but they did not work out . cause book fans hated how many changes the movies . had. so what faverote books of yours do you think were ruined as adaptations..

I want to watch a good movie for each category. I need about 2 movies for each category, and if people can find some for me, they can tell me, and I will try to watch them and rate them out of 10 after I watch them. If I already watched that movie, I would say that I already watched that movie. Please give recommendations.
