She’s incredible! A powerhouse of comedic and dramatic talent - I had no idea! The Invite was this subtle, awkward performance, self conscious, anxious, so interesting and well played. Then I want your sex is this bodacious, loud, sexy, ridiculous role! So much range across two movies in such quick succession - I’m now fascinated and want to watch everything else she’s done!

Need some late-night movie recommendations that will make the boys feel edgy and grown up without getting me in trouble with their parents. Give me your best edgy, scary, counterculture, funny, or action movies that won’t scar a 12 yr old kid for life or get me banned from the dad’s club, but will still make the boys feel like they got away with something cool.

Rewatching Meet the Parents for the 100th time and it’s one my favourite comfort films, but recently I’ve realised how unlikeable Pam is and how poorly she treats Greg.

Largest examples are:
Greg loses his suitcase on the way to meet her parents, and instead of taking him to some local shops so he can buy some essentials, she tells him to borrow clothes and pjs from her dad and underwear from her brother. He’s never met any of her family before and she won’t even ask on his behalf, just smiles at him like he’s crazy to not want to wake up her brother and ask to borrow boxers!

Another thing is how they constantly belittle his career as a nurse and instead of shutting it down, she laughs along. I get that it was early 2000”s and it was seen as a feminine profession but come on Pam! Stand up for your fella

It got me thinking about other films and other examples of a film having a character that we are supposed to root for as a "good person," but when you really look at it, they are actually a bit of an a-hole?

Hello everyone! Women might be especially helpful in answering this question, as I am seeking help from a demographic different than my own.

Basically what is in the title. It's an inpatient mental health treatment facility for traumatized, victimized, abused, and neglected teenage girls. I'm trying to avoid anything you might consider triggering to that demographic (gunshots, sexual violence, excessive cursing, domestic violence, drug abuse, etc.) while also choosing movies that aren't "for babies" as the patients have so aptly put it. I've had great success with girly comedies, especially those that approach the inappropriate topics, but never really cross them. It leads to a great opportunity for discussing how we feel about the characters and the choices they made in a group therapy environment.

Examples of movies that played really well: Clueless, approaches sexual assault but never visually crosses the line, the "sex scene" setup is given to a scene where the audience knows he is gay and it's more of a comedy moment, she ends up with her half brother but its framing in-movie is very clear and opened up an interesting discussion; Legally Blonde, has sexual concepts sprinkled throughout, but the farthest a character actually goes on screen is a hand on Elle's clothed thigh, it's a story of empowerment and believing in yourself; The Devil Wears Prada is, at least to modern audiences, a story of a woman standing up for herself not only against her boss but also her friends, the film makes it clear that she is sexually assaulted in Paris but goes from Andy clearly stating that she is too drunk to say no to Simon (shirtless, but you can see shirtless men at the pool or beach) to her being disgusted by him.

It's a delicate line, but the adolescent girls appreciate the movies that I pick. It is the most cooperative, focused, quiet, and also communicative, I have ever seen them be, and I would love to facilitate that more if anybody has ideas.

Movies often have a character that represents what the author and audience despises. They usually create a scenario where the protagonist speaks some personal truth to this character, but it’s really for the sake of the audience.

I’m not talking about the main antagonist. I’m thinking more about the random barista character that is told off because the drinks are silly or pretentious sounding to the main character. Stuff like that.

Ok. First of all I've never seen something like this, specifically.

Period piece 50's movies almost ALWAYS give some kind of wink and nod to 50s film making. Or even, a slight acknowledgement of the filmmaking of yesteryear.

This film does not in any way do that. It's a fully indie movie style. The first 5 minutes, almost infuriatingly so. Like a big middle finger to the audience. Ok. Messaged received.

Aside from that. This is an Amazon original movie that Amazon has quietly removed from it's platform. Amazon has declined any public content as to why. The movie is critically acclaimed and of a much better quality than the normal standard for "Amazon Original." Spoiler alert! >! this is a film about aliens <! and also very much about using the 50's as "American mentality."

The fact that I literally had to use VPN to watch this film tells me something. What that something is, I leave to you. Please. Go watch it.

I couldn't think of anything to watch this morning, so I threw caution to the wind and picked the first adventure that popped up on my Plex, which just so happened to be Sahara.

I like this movie a lot. It's just plain old fun. I understand that a lot of people seem to not like it, author Clive Cussler in particular, but I just don't get it.

Matthew McConaughey and Steve Zahn work very well together, and William H Macy and Penélope Cruz are also a lot of fun as well.

When reading up on why people didn't like this movie, I was pretty surprised to learn that Cussler actively hated it, misunderstood his contract with the producers, got really angry they weren't doing a 1:1 faithful reproduction of his 541 page novel and did just about everything he could to muddy the waters. He even went so far as to sue. Not only did he lose, he wound up losing an additional 4 million dollars of his own money on top of the 10 million he got paid for agreeing to let the movie be made.

On the flip side, I learned Matthew McConaughey spent a number of years actively campaigning to play Dirk Pitt. He, like Dirk in the movie, had an impossible dream of becoming the next best thing to Indiana Jones. On the one hand, I'm extremely glad the movie bombed because we got The McConaissance. He is a superb dramatic actor and I just really dig his new style.

On the other hand ... Imagine what we might've gotten if Cussler hadn't been such a crybaby.

Here is an article I wrote for a blog / fanzine, and originally published it there. I wanted to share it on here too, and I hope that it fits to the subreddit. Maybe someone is interested in it. (if it does not fit to the sub - feel free to delete it again)

Jodorowsky's works were one of my first big, big loves, and not just in the field of scifi, but when talking about media, stories, art, when I was a teenager, even before William Gibson really hit me, before Neo and The Matrix, or before I became lost within the stories of Stanislaw Lem.
How was that possible, or rather, how did that happen?
Well, I guess, and it's an educated guess (I hope!) that the majority of people these days know Jodorowsky because he did not make Dune. And that is quite the feat indeed, becoming famous for a movie that... you did not even end up making!
The story is covered elsewhere already, just go and dig on the internet. In the 70s, Jodorowsky got the rights to Dune (or he thought he could get them, can't remember exactly), then went on a completely whacked out cruise around the world, in order to recruit Pink Floyd, H.R. Giger, Orson Welles, future set and special FX artists of Star Wars and Alien... and then it went "kaboom!" as expected, even blew a few people's brains out (i.e. they became "mental unstable" for a while).

In the end, David Lynch got to make Dune instead, and, much much later, Denis Villeneuve got to make a more well-received version. (BTW, as Pink Floyd was in the trailer for that version of Dune, my educated guess is that Denis Villeneuve sought out to rip-off Jodo's ideas for good).

So, I assume people know all of this. But, I think there is a thing that is lesser known, which is what happened to Jodorowsky afterwards.
And this is that he became a comic book artist (or "graphic novel", like the art folk like to say these days). And I kid you not, he went into the comics industry, and became very, very well known and famous by making comic books for teenagers and young adults (like me when I first read them).
At least on the outside label.

Because the truth is that he took the most outrageous ideas he had for his dune movie. and even expanded them. he added some other strange ideas. and also used some of the earlier ones he had. and used that to build his comics (aka "graphic novels"). and for later comics, he came up with just as outrageous ideas.

i should add that he rarely painted (drawed?) them. he recruited other people for that, like moebius (author of the well known "blueberry" comics) or a host (army?) of others.

the books were a creative collab between him and the artists.

so... yeah, how to describe his comics? it's usually scifi, but his own style, i'd say... often very cyberpunk, there is also stuff that is like space operas, but never with a clean "black vs white" morality... more like a dirty version of epic scifi franchises...

the stories are full of references to psychoactive substances, religious cults, conspiracy, tarot, tantra, there is real violence (often getting very nasty), there is intimacy... let's just say that when some big US corporation brought his "before the incal" series to the american audience, they literally enlisted artists to "paint the clothes back on" for some panels! (quite a few panels, actually).

but it's never 100% nihilism, there are also shiny heroes and a possible, positive ending...

that's the universe, the future of mankind, like these books envision. books? well, comics, and i hope you are able to consider comics as real, serious "books".

okay some people will scream now: "wait, i know jodorowsky, but he did not do comics, he made movies, like el topo or the holy mountain".

yes, that is true. but his major body of work is his comics books (aka "graphic novels", hah!)

i suppose he is one of the most prolific comic authors in the 20th and 21th century. it is hard to find a complete list or index. but it must be close to 100 of volumes (or more).
"the incal" alone has a dozen of spin off series that are completed by now, and new spin offs seem to spawn every year.

plus it's not just scifi anymore, there are western comics, comics set in the middle ages, fantasy books. oddly enough, they stay similar to his other works, and even the western ones are about drugs, divine intervention / punishment, mystical conspiracies.
ah well.

all i can say is i highly recommend jodorowsky's comic books.

We were watching Lockup tonight and my wife says "he sure likes climbing through massive fans", and she's right I think. I can think on at least three films. Daylight, Lockup, and Tango and Cash. Can anyone think on another film where Stallone stops a massive intake fan with his muscles? It seemed like a pretty popular bit in the 80s.
