Need some late-night movie recommendations that will make the boys feel edgy and grown up without getting me in trouble with their parents. Give me your best edgy, scary, counterculture, funny, or action movies that won’t scar a 12 yr old kid for life or get me banned from the dad’s club, but will still make the boys feel like they got away with something cool.

Rewatching Meet the Parents for the 100th time and it’s one my favourite comfort films, but recently I’ve realised how unlikeable Pam is and how poorly she treats Greg.

Largest examples are:
Greg loses his suitcase on the way to meet her parents, and instead of taking him to some local shops so he can buy some essentials, she tells him to borrow clothes and pjs from her dad and underwear from her brother. He’s never met any of her family before and she won’t even ask on his behalf, just smiles at him like he’s crazy to not want to wake up her brother and ask to borrow boxers!

Another thing is how they constantly belittle his career as a nurse and instead of shutting it down, she laughs along. I get that it was early 2000”s and it was seen as a feminine profession but come on Pam! Stand up for your fella

It got me thinking about other films and other examples of a film having a character that we are supposed to root for as a "good person," but when you really look at it, they are actually a bit of an a-hole?

Beyond standard 3D and IMAX, theater chains over the decades have experimented with everything from Smell-O-Vision and physical program booklets to local host introductions, specialized midnight runs, and niche lobby displays. Which theatrical novelty actually enhanced your moviegoing experience before it got phased out by corporate cost-cutting?

She’s incredible! A powerhouse of comedic and dramatic talent - I had no idea! The Invite was this subtle, awkward performance, self conscious, anxious, so interesting and well played. Then I want your sex is this bodacious, loud, sexy, ridiculous role! So much range across two movies in such quick succession - I’m now fascinated and want to watch everything else she’s done!

When I was unemployed at the beginning of the summer, I suddenly had a ridiculous amount of free time. So I started watching a different movie on Tubi almost every night. I ended up going down a bit of a rabbit hole with slice-of-life movies and eventually put together a list of the 10 that I enjoyed the most, along with my ratings.

One thing I noticed about almost every movie that made the list is that they all have that very specific “people just living their lives” feeling. There’s usually a party, drinking, smoking, hanging out, relationships, random conversations, people making questionable decisions, etc. Nothing necessarily has to be happening for hours at a time. That’s basically what I consider slice-of-life:. Movies where you’re just watching people exist and experience everyday life, even when that life is messy as hell.

Here are my 10 favorites, in no particular order:

Besides Still Waters - 10/10

a grieving young man loses his parents in a car crash and invites his childhood friends to his family’s foreclosed lake house for one final weekend.

This one became one of my favorite movies of all time. The writing and the scenography are exceptional. This movie will change your life.

Month to Month - 7.5/10

A guy gets his car stolen in LA and spends all day trying to find it.

The premise gets you hooked the entire movie and the soundtrack was really good too. There is also a lot of funny moments.

Drunk Bus - 9/10

A guy in his early 20s works as a bus driver in a college town and befriends an older big Samoan punk guy.

I thought the pacing was dull at the beginning but once it picked up holy shit, this movie is amazing. Has a really deep lesson too.

Avenues - 9/10

Two guys meet two girls at an Indian restaurant in New York and party all day.

This movie is great. It takes place on a winter snowy day in New York. Perfect winter movie.

The 4th -10/10

A guy tries to make a BBQ on the 4th of July and everything goes wrong lol.

This one also became one of my favorite movies. It's so hysterical at the beginning. Filmed in LA. Perfect summer movie.

Almost Friends - 8/10

A guy has a crush on a girl that works at a coffee shop and then befriends her.

Their life's just get entangled together. There is a lot of parties too which was great.

Northwood Pie - 10/10

A guy in his early 20s gets his first job at a pizzeria in Northwood California.

Again this one became one of my favorites. Every Millennial will relate to this movie.

Out and About - 7.5/10

A middle aged guy takes a walk in his old neighborhood in Upstate New York.

If you like taking walks and you like Upstate New York, this movie is for you.

Good Luck With Everything - 7/10

While housesitting for a friend, a recently single man hosts a girl who is crashing on the couch for the week.

The weakest movie on this list. It was pretty entertaining though.

Paperback - 7.3/10

A pizza cook who's never left his college town meets the woman of his dreams but it turns out it's his old best friend's wife lol.

The premise is hysterical. Totally worth the watch.

If you have nothing going on this weekend, grab some food, throw one of these on and see what you think. Most of these are the kind of movies I could throw on late at night and just get completely absorbed in watching these people drink, smoke, party, argue, hook up and just generally exist. That’s really the appeal of this type of movie for me.

Movies often have a character that represents what the author and audience despises. They usually create a scenario where the protagonist speaks some personal truth to this character, but it’s really for the sake of the audience.

I’m not talking about the main antagonist. I’m thinking more about the random barista character that is told off because the drinks are silly or pretentious sounding to the main character. Stuff like that.

Scott “Kid Cudi” Mescudi has recently been teasing his second directorial effort in a year, on the heels of the addiction drama Doe. And we can now tell you that it’s Wrong Number, a horror thriller where he stars opposite Barbie Ferreira (Mile End Kicks).

Currently in production in Los Angeles, Wrong Number centers on Ibn (Mescudi), a lonely self-help author whose unexpected romance with a mysterious woman named Eliza (Ferreira) turns into a waking nightmare when he becomes the target of an unseen stalker and the prime suspect in a string of murders.

Hello everyone! Women might be especially helpful in answering this question, as I am seeking help from a demographic different than my own.

Basically what is in the title. It's an inpatient mental health treatment facility for traumatized, victimized, abused, and neglected teenage girls. I'm trying to avoid anything you might consider triggering to that demographic (gunshots, sexual violence, excessive cursing, domestic violence, drug abuse, etc.) while also choosing movies that aren't "for babies" as the patients have so aptly put it. I've had great success with girly comedies, especially those that approach the inappropriate topics, but never really cross them. It leads to a great opportunity for discussing how we feel about the characters and the choices they made in a group therapy environment.

Examples of movies that played really well: Clueless, approaches sexual assault but never visually crosses the line, the "sex scene" setup is given to a scene where the audience knows he is gay and it's more of a comedy moment, she ends up with her half brother but its framing in-movie is very clear and opened up an interesting discussion; Legally Blonde, has sexual concepts sprinkled throughout, but the farthest a character actually goes on screen is a hand on Elle's clothed thigh, it's a story of empowerment and believing in yourself; The Devil Wears Prada is, at least to modern audiences, a story of a woman standing up for herself not only against her boss but also her friends, the film makes it clear that she is sexually assaulted in Paris but goes from Andy clearly stating that she is too drunk to say no to Simon (shirtless, but you can see shirtless men at the pool or beach) to her being disgusted by him.

It's a delicate line, but the adolescent girls appreciate the movies that I pick. It is the most cooperative, focused, quiet, and also communicative, I have ever seen them be, and I would love to facilitate that more if anybody has ideas.

Ok. First of all I've never seen something like this, specifically.

Period piece 50's movies almost ALWAYS give some kind of wink and nod to 50s film making. Or even, a slight acknowledgement of the filmmaking of yesteryear.

This film does not in any way do that. It's a fully indie movie style. The first 5 minutes, almost infuriatingly so. Like a big middle finger to the audience. Ok. Messaged received.

Aside from that. This is an Amazon original movie that Amazon has quietly removed from it's platform. Amazon has declined any public content as to why. The movie is critically acclaimed and of a much better quality than the normal standard for "Amazon Original." Spoiler alert! >! this is a film about aliens <! and also very much about using the 50's as "American mentality."

The fact that I literally had to use VPN to watch this film tells me something. What that something is, I leave to you. Please. Go watch it.

The Twilight Saga is like comfort food for me. The movies aren't for everyone I know that.

But they comfort me. And with the weather outside taking a distinctly autumnal turn, the first movie in particular feels perfect. Im going to get wrapped up, get cosy, and have a Twilight marathon over this weekend.
