Trigger warning for death mention.

I lost the father of my baby during my pregnancy. We met after I lost my mom, and he lost his dad. We just understood each other in complicated grief and a lot more. He was the only person to fully understand me. I never felt more comfortable around anyone. Like I said, he's now gone. I've been numb ever since.

I had the baby and felt nothing towards him beyond instinctual stuff. Just this slight discomfort if he's out of my sight or in someone else's arms. Otherwise, it's like having a complicated goldfish. I don't look forward to his milestones. I'm just not even here. I only smile around others because I don't want the lecture about how much joy he is blah blah blah. My primary emotion is this strong apathy/irritability. Life just doesn't have the same weight it used to. I like to hope it's grief and postpartum. I'm trying to get help for both.

I wish someone could understand me where I am. My grandparents and parents are dead, and now the love of my life is gone. I don't have a support system, and every social worker asks me about it like it's a homework assignment I'm failing. I can't make people appear. I am suffering from it. If there was a resource or a family member who could I'D KNOW BY NOW. I can't afford childcare either. It's all a matter of covering someone's salary. Not possible.

I was recommended postpartum groups but if I hear someone with a partner and parents walking this earth complain, I can't control my anger. Logically I KNOW people having feelings like that in any situation is valid. I'm not myself. Even my therapist was concerned during my last session.

I've had to be strong most of my life because I didn't have a choice. I know people mean well, but it isn't a compliment. It's just a reminder I'll never be able to be soft or cared for.

I'm not looking for solutions or advice. Just a hug or two. Thank you for listening to my tedtalk.

Quick background: mid-size B2B software company, hybrid since forever. The unspoken deal was simple a couple days in office, and if prod broke at 9pm or a client panicked on a Saturday, someone fixed it from home. Unpaid, but nobody minded. Goodwill.

New CTO arrives from a much more rigid company. Second all-hands, he kills the flexible days: 9-5, in office, no exceptions. Asked about after-hours emergencies, he says, paraphrasing only slightly,"If you're not at your desk, actively working, I don't consider it work. I don't care what you'd have done from your couch at 9pm."

Someone half-jokes,"So nothing outside 9-5 at the desk counts?" Him, dead serious: "Exactly. Glad we're aligned."

We were aligned. So we complied fully, literally.

Slack got muted at 5:00 sharp. Nobody checked email after leaving. A PM pinged on-call at 6pm about a broken integration and got silence until 9am the next day.

Then, one Friday, a deploy went out at 4:52, minutes before the freeze a configuration value missed one customer segment. Under the old system, someone would've caught it from their phone by 5:30. Under the new one: the alert fired at 5:06. Nobody was at their desk, and per the CTO himself, that meant nobody was working. So nobody looked.

It ran the whole weekend. Our biggest client had a fully broken dashboard for 61 hours. By Monday at 9am there were 200+ support tickets, a furious VP of Sales, and a client using the word "churn" a lot.

The CTO demanded to know how nobody noticed for two and a half days. Our team lead completely deadpan pulled up his exact quote from the all-hands: "if you're not at your desk, actively working, I don't consider it work." Nobody was at their desk all weekend. By his own definition, nobody was working. Nothing to notice.

I've never heard a room go that quiet.

We got a real on-call rotation within the week actual comp time, not vibes. Hybrid quietly came back a month later as a "pilot." Nobody's said "if you're not at your desk" out loud since.

Turns out a lot of "not real work" had been holding the place together for free.

This game sucks.

The combat is so shallow, there is no room for creativity. You parry, you stun, you barrage, you special attack. Over and over again. Any variety in combat comes solely from the combat finishers. Granted there’s a good amount of those, but you have zero say in what finisher animation you’ll even get. It’s totally random.

The level design is incredibly linear. There’s absolutely zero exploration, which is fine in character action/hack and slash games, but again, the combat is not complex enough to warrant such linear levels. Devil May Cry this is not.

The only side content are “nightmare doors”. These provide 2 kinds of challenges. Traversal and, you guessed it, more fucking shallow combat. There’s not even any traversal tools. No double jump, no wall running, no air dodging, nothing. The traversal “challenges” amount to holding the sprint button and just hitting jump as Wolverine magnetizes to the nearest zipline or ledge

The skill tree is also so incredibly basic, I don’t even know why it exists. Skills gradually unlock throughout the story, and so there were many times I had skill points to use but literally couldn’t even spend them because I had already unlocked all available skills, and needed to wait to advance the story to unlock more skills.

Then there’s adaptations. A tree where you can unlock and equip a set amount of passive abilities . I honestly don’t have much to speak on that, because they’re so fucking pointless I forget their existence about halfway through the game.

All collectibles, and “hidden” chests, stare you right in the face, you can’t miss them even if you tried.

I will say though, the story was pretty good, and I thought the actors knocked their performances out of the park, but nowhere close to being good enough to redeem this game.

Bottom line, this is the first Insomniac game I have been disappointed by, and I’m old enough to remember playing Spyro on the PS1. I mean, massive disappointment.

This game sucks.
